I was in bootcamp on september 11th at Camp Pendleton CA . No one told any of us recruits until the 13th or the 14th (all the dates kind of blur together in bootcamp). You dont get any news in bootcamp and never watch any TV so we all had no clue. So it is interesting to hear everybody’s story since I have no clue what I was doing–I was probably getting yelled at by some drill instructor. I am always curious about what they must have been thinking on that morning. They knew and told none of us. I am sure that they saw their job of brainwashing 18 year old men to be regretless killers as way more important.
Thought I would share. Not sure if it’s interesting or not.

Jake, in case you haven’t already, you should check out the podcast at http://thehistoryofrome.typepad.com/ – I found it to be a very good overview of Roman history. You probably won’t learn anything specifically new about Cicero but late Roman Republican history obviously sets the stage for his life and his opinions. I’m not in any way affiliated with the project, btw, just a big fan
