TGA Podcast: Episode 139

Flat-Earthers invade TGA, Miss USA contestants have ‘opinions’ about evolution, and some Rabbis condemn a dog to death by stoning. Don’t miss out.

Sorry Jake but the Flat Earthers are right about indefinite accelaration. Your mistake is that you are adding speeds newtonionly. This is not accurate at near light speed.

If object A is constantly accelerating and object B is at rest (relatively speaking) Then B can observe that A is constantly accelerating but that the accelaration get exponentially smaller eg.
T1= 2 miles per second per second
T2= 1 miles per second per second
T3= 1/2 miles per second per second
    Ect.
Note this is AFTER accounting for speed of light delay
Thus never really reaching light speed only approaching it.

But because of time delaytion at relativistic speeds A would observe that it is constantly accelerating at the same rate. Because as A’s speed increases A’s time gets slower.

Also I should point out that I am NOT a flat Earther.
What I don’t get is where is all that energy for the acceleration coming from? Can it run out?

I suggest reading the following from Scienceblogs “Thoughts from Kansas” regarding the Jewish Court sentences Dog to Death story. I think it will show that the story is rather misreported. I trust a retraction/correction will come in the next episode?

Everyone on earth would be traveling at the same speed, so where is this supposed observer supposed to be?

    Oscar

    @Jake
Somewhere else and at a constant speed with no acceleration. Fell off the earth maybe?

hey jake i would enjoy taking the survey if you would like to send me it at drogers1082@msn.com

    Hey Jacob!
Any idea when you will do the bible story on Noah like you mentioned a few weeks back? It would be timely due to to this crazy story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20110622/od_yblog_upshot/two-by-two-a-real-life-noahs-ark

So, if the Earth is constantly accelerating, does that not mean that the sun and moon are also accelerating at that speed, and sometimes faster? to keep up and to continue to “revolve” around the Earth?

@Oscar on the site jake linked to in the black energy post, one of the FAQ is what if one jumps off the edge. They say the UA will affect them the same as it does the planet so they will appear to be standing next to the planet.

@Dale Anything moving in a circular path is said to be accelerating. So technically the moon is accelerating around the earth, and the sun (as it revolves and follows a large orbit around the centre of the galaxy) both are in constant acceleration. Acceleration = A change in velocity. Speed is magnitude of velocity, so the earth is constantly accelerating (due to it being in orbit), but its speed is constant. Having said all that, I get the feeling that this isn’t what flat eartheres are talking about lol.
If anyone has any more physics questions about this feel free to ask, I’m doing a theoretical physics degree so yeah :).

Just a little comment. As an Israeli living in Jerusalem I can tell you that you can fill up a whole show with the craziness that is the Haredi (Orthodox) Jewry. However that particular story is not true. Jews don’t believe in reincarnation and in fact there are no concrete statements made about the afterlife. That said, there is plenty of other stuff that could make your Flat Earth Society look sane and balanced.

Have you actually spent any time reading the Flat Earth Society’s forums?

They read suspiciously like the forums at Landover Baptist and ChristWire – both parody sites in which the core forum users and commenters never break character, but double down when called on the ridiculousness of their positions.

I suspect you’ve been massively trolled, and they’re all giggling about the fact that you just wasted over half an hour on them.

    What up, boys?

Greetings & salutations from Chicago (Go Blackhawks). Go ahead and send the survey and I’ll grace you with my show-improving genius. I’ve got plenty of ideas that can help put this bitch over the top in next year’s About.com’s Atheist Podcast Poll. Send the survey to goathedxxx@gmail.com. And if I can help at all then throw me that free membership, I’ll work for it. I’ve got more time than money.
