Tell your Mom you love her

Alright, I have a message to anyone out there who thinks the whole “Mother’s Day” thing is a manufactured holiday created specifically by greeting card companies as a way of using guilt to coerce millions of people to buy their product: Congratulations on properly identifying the history of this holiday. Now go fucking call your mom, smart-ass.

Sure, the holiday is kind of bogus, but the fact we were exploited through guilt goes to show that the emotion is there for a reason. You probably haven’t treated your mom as nicely as you should. Ignoring this day would be a mistake.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms who listen to the show. Give a shout in the comments if that’s you!

    The Other Tom

My mother made six attempts to murder me, as well as the three or four unsuccessful attempts to murder my father, before she finally murdered my uncle and got locked up. Really, I don’t need to read stuff like this.

Oh, Tom, I’m sorry your mother is crazy, but you are the exception in this case, so deal with it. Most of us are rarely victims of our mother’s crazy…or at least not murderous kind of crazy.

You can’t go around in life getting offended because something that is perfectly normal and banal to everybody else stands out to you as an affront. You could have just thought, “Hmmm, obviously Jake is not directing this at me, considering I am in a very abnormal situation…so I will simply ignore this PSA,” instead of trying to make Jake and those of us with normal mother/child relationships feel like shit.

If the people in your life are truly worthy of your love and affection you’re doing it wrong if you need a special day to show them how much you care about them.

I’ve never celebrated Mother’s day, I’ve never needed to. I don’t need an excuse to do something nice for my Mom or take her to places she wants to see, we’re going to see Burton Cummings next week, I do it because that’s what people who care about each other *should* do.

Mother’s Day, Father’s Day (he’s been dead 15 years now – damn do I miss him), Valentine’s Day, Anniversaries, etc… If you need a special day to show the people in your life how much you care about them, you’re doing it wrong.

The history of Mother’s Day is actually a movement to oppose war, begun just after the U. S. Civil War and then warped into a day to honor mothers but absolutely not to be commercialized. Look up Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis in relation to this day.

How about using a bit of common sense and write a card and/or give her a call on Mother’s day AND also be nice and considerate the other 364 days?

And if your mother is in jail because she is a murderous bitch, or if she is simply loony, hard to get along with and so on, then you are exempt.
