I gotta see this

I love Derren Brown. With James Randi looking weaker by the minute, we need all the charismatic illusionists we can to expose the frauds out there exploiting gullible and vulnerable people. This apparently aired on Easter Weekend, so now I have to see if I can’t find myself a copy to watch…

I got the link (originally) from Atheist Media Blog’s website (http://www.atheistmedia.com/).

It was very interesting that he was not having a go at religion, but at the use of religion to perpetrate scams on the desperate and uninformed.

The caveat on the prosperity gospel was informative and horrifying.

Brilliant! Was quite creepy at time and beautifully explained techniques. I went to a Benny Hinn gig as a child and was “slain by the spirit.” Much later I learnt about hypnosis and deducted that that was what it was. It is very good to see a program that will teach at least a few ignorant people how it’s done.

I watched it on the night, it was really interesting but a bit disappointing that the crowd on the final night wasn’t bigger.

Apollo – It is interesting that he didn’t have a go at religion but I think we can see why he didn’t. As tempting as I’m sure it was for him, the point of the show was to protect people from the scams. So if he bashed people’s religion at the same time, they may not get the message or they might just refuse to watch the program.

I had the impression (strongly implied) that he absolutely was having a go at religion. He really didn’t need to spell it out or be direct about it due to the nature of the program. The fact that he needed to spell out that this wasn’t about doing the very thing it was doing speaks much about it. But, in doing so, I think it should implant some (strong?) doubt in the minds of general believers. Perhaps I am wrong, though.

The youtube link has been removed for copywrite reasons. You can watch it on the official channel 4 site.

I’m not sure if they’ve made it available outside the UK though.

Let me know if it works :-)

While I would certainly recommend going to the official site to view this, the YouTube link is definitely working; I just tested it. However, viewing the film from the official site is not an option for those within the U.S., sadly.

I’m glad I am not the only one who picked up on that godlessirish/HB. If you attack the religion, they go on the defensive and will become unrespondent to logic.

Attack the scam however…. kind of like a santa claus “gateway effect” but for adults.

I still can not believe Peter Popoff was not prosecuted back when James Randi exposed him and he is still at it today with his miracle “chernobyl water” and “holy sand”. GRRRRRR

Though at least OFCOM has rebuked stations for airing his adverts in the UK..

Actually yeah, It’s only blocked in the UK on youtube.

Love Derren Brown, missed this so I’ll have to catch it on 4′s player.

Incidentally, James Randi has criticised Derren in the past; he doesn’t like his use of the words “magic” and “hypnotism”.

@JAMESWPTV, especially with regard to the hypnotic/subliminal elements of the flock.
