Don’t try and pull the Holocaust card with Norman Finkelstein

I get angry whenever Jews trying to defend the treatment of Palestinians try and bring up the Holocaust, as though this was somehow a justification for the economic stranglehold Israel forces on Palestinians. The issue isn’t about what happened to their ancestors in WWII. That is merely a distraction from their own crimes and human rights violation. One atrocity does not justify another, and I’m glad Norman stood up to that bullshit. Takes a lot of courage to do that.

I agree with one of the comments on the youtube page for that clip- I don’t really have any idea what the context is here. It’s obvious that it was a very emotional and huge confrontation, but that’s all I can get. I don’t know what point the girl in yellow was trying to make, because I don’t know the speech points she was referring to.

    Very confusing.

she was just saying “hey don’t call me a nazi and don’t say I am acting like one” and he was all “my family was killed by people like you you nazi bitch”

Yes, it would have been nice to see the full video to get the context of what the talk was about. Though, in a quick browsing around the internet, it looks like he was comparing the treatment of the Palestinians by Israel with what happened to the Jewish peoples in the second world war.

The young lady in the video obviously took offence to that and since she specifically mentioned german lineage it makes me think she was german herself. I think it was very powerful for a Jewish man to stand up there and tell everyone that a large portion of his family was killed by Nazis during the war and because of that he will not stand idly by while his own people use the same tactics, while also using their past treatment to stifle any and all criticism of their actions, against another group of people.

I don’t know enough about the Israeli / Palestinian conflict to know if he’s right or wrong, particularly since many of the people who voted against Israel in the UN for committing war crimes are countries with an active hate on for them, but you have to admit that there just might be something there for a Jewish man who’s lost so much to the Nazis to compare his own people with them.

I am extremely under-informed about the Israeli Palestine conflict, so I won’t comment on that. But the guy who posted this (FarhanK501) is downright loony. He sees Illuminati symbols everywhere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6yqEN7ANBw&feature=related

That’s always the problem with the criticism, not only of Israel but of Judaism in general. When people attack Islam they are quick to point out that it’s a religion, not a race. But Judaism IS a religion and a race. So attacks on the faith can get pretty dicey, even without them pulling the Holocaust card.

I won’t comment about the video because it’s incomplete and it’s impossible to know its context, but it made me think about something about the jews (don’t get me wrong on what I’m about to say here, I’m not anti-semit)
One thing that always – for the lack of a better word – disturbed me towards the jews is that they like to play the victims. It’s understanble because they were persecuted and slaved in Ancient Egypt, they were opressed by the roman empire, they were persecuted during the inquisition and during the WWII; but I see some paranoia in the jewish community, they still have that mentality of “opressed people” and they don’t accept any critics towards that and when someone tells them that they are opressing and torturing people in Palestine just like it happened to them in WWII they have a hissy fit. Nobody is calling them nazis. They use the holocaust and say they are the victims not the opressors and so on…that’s just not right…

The whole idea of Israel is based on a victim mentality. The reason Jews needed a homeland is because they had been murdered by one government after another all over the world for centuries. The problem is, in a world where Jews are the most assimilated minority in the last Super power nation on earth, where they are intermarried more than any other group, where knowing someone Jewish is hardly remarked upon in most Western nations, what then is the point of an Israel? When so many of our friends or neighbors or family or favorite artist are Jewish how can we justify the existence of an Israel EXCEPT to keep bring up the holocaust?

the holocaust was what… 70 years ago? get over it. everyone has been persecuted at some point in time. you dont hear me crying about the local football team being named the Vikings even though they likely raped and pillaged my ancestors. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

For those who don’t know, today is Holocaust Memorial Day. The Holocaust is the backdrop to modern Jewish life. It’s the lens through witch we view ourselves and the world – it is the reminder that even “democratic” countries failed to come to our aid. It is also the reason the State of Israel exists.
Many Jews will say that anyone who criticizes Israel is an antisemitic, and many Jews will say that the Holocaust demonstrated the need for a “Jewish State” – and that, because of this, Israel either can do no wrong or is always justified because without a “homeland,” Jews are vulnerable to extreme antisemitic violence. The harsh reality is that Israel has become the perpetrator of racial violence, not the recipient. Normal Finkelstein often points that out, and in the process, he sometimes says that Israel is acting like Nazis. This is (most probably) what began the conflict in the video.
This shit has to stop. It’s important to remember the Holocaust as an example of Humanity Gone Wrong. It should be absolutely unacceptable to use the suffering of millions to justify further violence.
Goldenarms: I appreciate what you’re trying to say, you’re wrong. The Holocaust was the summit of a thousand years of persecution. It was organized, and it was targeted. It affected people I know. It split my family in two – I have no idea what happened to my family in Europe, because no one has herd from them since before the Holocaust. You’re analogy is very, very far from the mark.

It’s my opinion that Israel was created as an apology.
After the war ended and the world found out the terrible things jews went through during Hitler’s dictatorship they had guilty conscience and the UN – as way of compensating the jews for their suffering – decided to create a jewish state. And now look the conflicts that happens between palestinians and israelis.

There was no need to create a jewish state. UN wasn’t thinking straight when decided to do that.

Jews asking for their own state is pretty racist if you ask me. Why should any religion get their own country? That’s bullshit. America is your land. You’re free to practice your stupid religion here. Wear your hats and eat your matza balls here. No one cares except a few inbred southern boys.

full disclosure. I dont hate Jews, but I do think you’re stupid. Anyone who is religious is stupid, but I don’t hate you for it. And don’t give me any of that “we were here first” bullshit. You’re from Africa.

I am not Jewish. I have very little patience for those claiming the holocaust never happened and growing up I always had great sympathy for the state of Israel.

Israel as a state was established mostly out of a sense of remorse and horror because the allied countries did not really take steps to protect the jewish minorities in the nazi occupied territories. But make no mistake: Jewish activists and “freedom fighters” had been fighting against England for a state of Israel well before WWII. Except that then a much nastier common foe came into the scene.

However, when modern Israelis refuse to make the connection that what they are doing to the Palestinians today has many similarities to what was done to them in WWII, I can only call that disingenuous and dishonest. The Israeli have proven to be just as ruthless, just as heartless as the Nazis were. Different times, different situation, of course, but how else they justify their current policies?

No person with an open mind can look at the current palestinian situation, look at israel policies and not realize that a grave injustice is being committed. War crimes, check, racism, check, killings, check, forced interment, check. Just read the news.
Life under israeli rule is so oppressive, so inhuman that it explains, if not justifies, the culture of the suicide bomber. Would I not blow myself up if the Canadians were systematically and forcefully trying to extinguish my culture and way of life?

I don’t think the parallel is too far fetched. And using the holocaust as an excuse for further tragedy and oppression is reprehensible. They need someone like Norman Finkelstein to show them the error of their ways, since no non jewish person could do it without being silenced by the antisemitic label. Truth is truth.

The fact that you people as atheists believes the lies of Pallywood and Islamic al-taqqiya, just like this hizbullah-supporting Finkelstein idiot, amazes me.

As an atheist I will always support Israel and it’s right to defend itself from Islamic terrorists and liars.

Only because one woman played the victim card doesn’t make the whole country of Israel responsible for her action.

Real atheists would support Israel. But you people are so blinded by your hate for Christianity and Judaism that you will side with the most intolerant people on this earth (only because they aren’t jews or christians). Some people are fucking stupid and yet they call themselves atheists.
