TGA Podcast reaches 500,000 downloads

Can you believe that The Good Atheist Podcast has been downloaded over 500,000 times? That means we’ve consumed roughly 7.5 million megs of data (or 7.5 terrabytes) on podcasts alone. That also roughly translates to about 47.5 years worth of me talking. Yes, you should be scared.

To celebrate this milestone, we’ll be giving away 2 memberships for free, provided you leave a comment about when you started listening to the show, and tell us which one is your favorite episode so far and why. Good luck everyone!

    Congrats

I don’t need a free membership. But my first episode was the first solo episode, maybe Ep.11? Couldn’t get through it at first, so I listened to the one before it. My favorite episode is the first Scientology ep.

I started listening at the first ep. My favourite show as ryans show. Usually ryan is to jake, a sugar coating that took the edge off of the bitterness which is great, but this time ryan created a pot full of passion which jake gently stirred. Congrats guys! It’s alive!

I’m already a paying ember, so I don’t need a free membership, but I think I started listening to your show when I first discovered Audiobooks and podcasts as a new way of assimilating information.

I had just finished listening to The God Delusion when I decided, Hey, let’s try this podcast thing, so I typed in Atheist, and behold, there were Atheism podcasts. TGA was the only one that really stood out to me after sampling all of them, so I checked it out, found the website, and downloaded EVERY episode I could as far back as I could and just MARATHON’d it. I can officially say I have heard every TGA podcast that I have access to.

    Keep em coming!

I started listening in the summer of 2008. Because my basement was nice and cool I stayed down there a lot and that summer I listened to the entire archive. Back then it was only like 40ish shows. My favorite episode to date is the one where Jacob and Ryan suggest building a mobile abortion clinic (van) and traveling the continent in a ScoobyDoo-esque fashion; helping poor people all over by aborting their unwanted fetuses. Hilarious.

I love the one where you complain about the catholic church, you know – the one and only one. I been listening for a year and a half now… actually the podcast helped me realize that I am an atheist.

I’m already a member but I found the podcast in kind of a stupid way. I was looking for a good podcast about atheism, so I did a search for ‘good atheist podcast’…

Hi, I’m Laura, aged 17 from the UK, and I started listening to The Good Atheist late last year.

Over here religion doesn’t have the same hold over politics and day-to-day life as it seems to have where you are. However, we still have many issues that atheists need to address. I come from one of the more rural parts of England where religion is still a large part of petty, insular village politics, and when you’re describing to someone where you live, it’s still common to tell them which church parish you belong to.

It would seem to most that we don’t have much of a problem. It’s an idyllic country life, complete with church jumble sales and vicars wives who make strawberry jam and knit jumpers for the elderly. But that’s until you some across the posters advertising the homosexuality-is-a-sin lectures, the anti-abortion propaganda in the sexual health clinic, the guest speaker invited to the school to talk about “creation science”… Then you realize that we have a much bigger problem than first thought.

I am so grateful to your show (and would love a free membership, hint, hint!) mainly, I suppose, for teaching me how to be angry, and for showing me that I don’t just have to follow the herd and pretend to believe in all this rubbish. I now have a large collection of atheist podcasts that I can listen to on the bus on the way home from school, just to inject a little reason into my head after being inundated with so much pure stupid all day! So, really, you guys are responsible for keeping me sane!

Umm…my favorite show…I did like the recent bonus show about the Jacob of the Bible. I actaully find the Bible very interesting, and I think it’s great to read as literature. Shakespeare, for example, wouldn’t be the same without some literacy in the Bible. I also enjoyed episode 114, in particular the part about agnosticism. Until recently I was still hedging my bets with regards to the whole atheist/agnostic thing, and that podcast was one of the contributing factors in my decision to take the plunge!

Anyway, you guys are doing a great job – can’t wait to hear more from you!

Can’t believe I forgot that episode early on where you talk about derren brown touching athiests. Derren does seem to be the new generations’ Randi.
