Sigh

From the BBC:

Men and women have been banned from shaking hands in a district of Somalia controlled by the Islamist group al-Shabab. Under the ban imposed in the southern town of Jowhar, men and women who are not related are also barred from walking together or chatting in public.

It is the first time such social restrictions have been introduced.

The al-Shabab administration said those who disobeyed the new rules would be punished according to Sharia law. The BBC’s Mohamed Moalimuu in Mogadishu says the penalty would probably be a public flogging.

You’d think a town in Somalia would have more important things to deal with than the explosive sexual danger of inter-gender handshakes…

What you won’t read much about is how the very fact that al-Shabab exists is due almost entirely to the american gov’t fucking with whatever has passed for a goverment in Somalia since the mid 90′s.

After the UN “police action” in the 90′s that led to the “Blackhawk Down” incident a sort of informal government composed mainly of tribal elders called the “Islamic Courts Union” had taken hold in most of the country and was the closest thing Somalia had seen to a government in over a decade of civil war, brutal warlords and foreign occupation.

Of course George W. Shrub, in his infantile idiocy ~*ahem*~… infinite wisdom saw the word “islamic” in the name of this nascent government and decided that that it was in the interest of US national security and the “war on terror” to covertly support and arm the warlord Hussein Mohamed Farrah Aidid, the son of the man who was the target of the aforementioned UN police action and who’s faction was responsible for the deaths of US soldiers in the battle of Mogadishu (AKA Blackhawk Down).

When that tactic failed to produce the desired results, which I can only speculate was the utter destruction of anything so much as resembling a government in Somalia, Bush then enlisted the US military’s Ethiopia Divison ~*ahem*~…. the Ethiopian government for a full scale invasion and occupation of Somalia. The end result of these actions was the displacement or deaths of thousands and the installation of a now fractured Islamic Courts Union, the very group they set out to overthrow in the first place. Many of the fractured elements of the ICU, now radicalized by a US backed Ethiopian occupation and anti-american muslim fundamentalists, regrouped into the al-Shabab militia that is now terrorizing the Somali countryside and sowing more chaos in a country that has known nothing but war and occupation for nearly two decades.

However, none of this in any way excuses or rationalizes al-Shabab’s applications of Sharia law. The sooner islam, much like christianity in the west, is dragged kicking and screaming into modernity and leaves behind this dark age barbarism, the better off muslims, and by extension all of humanity, will be for it.

Any system of belief that would turn simple human interaction into a moral failing is both fundamentally flawed and inherently evil.

These idiots are trying to become the next Saudi Arabia. They’ve been going at it forever now, one of the most notable piece of ‘progress’ being banning women from wearing bras. Because they’re too western or some shit.

Some assholes with guns grabbed some women and shook their chests in front of a huge crowd to… I don’t fucking know, to test how well they can hold off their stiffies. Who knows how these fuckers think.

You’d think they’d be a little more concerned about the fact that their whole country is a toxic dumping ground for every other country.

It doesn’t help matters that Saudi Arabia is exporting it’s positively draconian brand of Wahabi hyperfundamentalism to nearly every corner of the muslim world including Somalia.

True. Ugh! I can’t believe that ass stink of a country got into the UN women’s council… Srsly, how the fuck?!

I think it’s thanks to Saudi Arabia’s influence that Islam is still the backward fuck religion that it is. Somalia’s slowly turning into them, a single, small group of shriveled old immams are making more and more ridiculous rules to reduce the women’s rights in Malaysia… Iran’s current lying bastard of a president is no doubt supported by the regime…

The royal house in Saudi Arabia has even been trying to force women to wear head coverings at mecca. This is a time-honored, immense tradition they’re trying to change. At mecca women have never been required to wear any head coverings.

I doubt the Saudis have much influence on the Iranian government, based only on the fact that Saudi Arabia is dominated by Sunnis while Iran is dominated by Shi’ites, and not because of any redeeming quality of the iranian theocracy.

That aside you can pretty much gurantee that anywhere you find a large sunni population you will also find some level of saudi influence and funding, and almost always to the fanatical and extremist segments of that population.

The House of Saud itself has, for all intents and purposes, handed the country over to radical wahabist clerics in return for enriching themselves on the country’s oil wealth relatively unmolested. That’s not to say that the royal family isn’t full muslim fundamentalists, it is, but there are also many, many members of the House of Saud that are muslim in name only and about as devout as Sarah Palin is smart.

They will however, make pretty much any edict, pass any law, and mete out any draconian punishment the council of clerics tells them to for fear, and rightly so, that to openly oppose or critisize the clerics would place their grasp of the throne in serious jeopardy.
