Site News! Slight Name Change

Alright gang,

I was getting quite a few questions regarding membership, so I’ve changed the names a bit to make them a lot clearer. The free membership (which gives you partial bonus content) is called “The Freebie”. Doesn’t get simpler than that. The paid memberships are now Regular and Hard-Core. As you can guess, if you’re hard core and you want to give us more than 20 bucks a year, you get to prove to no-one (but us of course) you are goddamn awesome. The rest of you are Moderates, and you’ll just have to get used to it.

As for other site news, we’re working on getting the iTunes feed to work for the bonus shows. For members, you can use the RSS link that’s in your sidebar and input that in your Google reader. It should allow you to access bonus material without needing to visit the site.

***NOTE*** Nothing changes for those not interested in membership at all. We still record the weekly free show and that won’t change anytime soon. All of this is for people who just want more, baby!

    Hi Jake, Ryan, and Jeff…

Congrats on the new site format, I am *really* liking the ease and flow of the new design as its much easier to find stuff now. Also kudos on the recent interviews, very enjoyable and I look forward to more in the future.

I’d like just a bit of clarification about this whole ‘Freebie’, ‘Awesome’, and ‘Mucho Macho Mega Ultra Stupendous to Extreme’ membership choices. Since you now have the three tiers, with one being the ‘Freebie’, does this mean one now needs to be signed up a member to get even the “free” weekly show?

In other words is my iTunes going to suddenly stop sending me TGA on a weekly basis because I didn’t register as a ‘Freebie’ member?

Though I have to admit the 5.00 monthly option is tempting. Sure its more than the annual one, but the monthly amount is comparatively small and easier to rationalize (its only five bucks!!) than somehow managing to come up with 20.00 bucks.

Once I get my money situation fixed up in the new year, “Santa” is going to really spoil his nieces this year, I will give some serious thought to the ‘Mucho Macho Mega Ultra Stupendous to Extreme’ version.

Now I do have an idea to make this a bit more streamlined and easier for you, while iTunes doesn’t allow for paid Podcasts they do allow for payment on other spoken word entertainment. If you figure out how you can set up the bonus shows on iTunes for $0.99 each, or a provide a season’s pass of 52 shows for $40.00, I’d be willing to bet you’d have a number of people who’d willingly pay $0.99 in a heart beat (I’m personally not a big fan of paypal, I’ve had friends lose their stored cash for seemingly no reason, but I would gladly give my money to Apple) or perhaps buy the Season’s Pass. Unfortunately I’m not sure what you have to do to be able to sell your show in the iTunes Music Store but I do know if manage to get it on there they’ll take a cut for handling the “admin” side (servers, credit transactions, etc) and give you the rest on a quarterly basis or when you reach a certain threshold of funds.

    Thanks, Pete…

    Oh, and PS:

Thank you so very much for putting “Science is Real” as your video of the day today. Thank you. It took me months to get that damn song out of my head (Science is real, science is real, science is re-ee-he-he-aa-ll) and now its back in there.

Not that it isn’t a good song, its great, but its so damn catchy you’ll find yourself humming it nearly all the damn time. I curse you to watch “The Sound of Music”, that damn goodnight song the kids sing (So long, farewell, Avidazen goodbye) will be stuck in your head for weeks.

@WCLPETER – no, you’ll still get the show. If you have an account aka a freebie membership, you will sometimes get otherwise-paid-only content for free as a reward for having a login and engaging in the site.
Source – past podcasts & posts on the site, find them yourself if you don’t believe me.

Can I interject and say that I felt way cooler when I was a gold member than I do now as a “moderate atheist?” Because I’m no moderate bitches.

No, nothing changes about the free show. It’s just a way for people to get a little more content just by showing up and signing up. Ultimately I want people to become patrons of course.

It’s been changed to just “Regular” and Hard-Core to avoid presumption about your atheism.

You’re calling them the wrong things. You should have 4 levels:

Parents will disown me (Freebie but you’re under 18 so it’s OK)

    Closet Atheist (Freebie)

    Accomodationist Atheist (Regular)

    Militant Atheist (hard-core)

4 is too confusing, although I like the “Parents will disown me” membership. It sounds sexy.

    In the “Parents” theme:

Parents will disown me (Freebie but you’re under 18 so it’s OK)

Parents disowned me but I don’t care (Freebie)

Parents didn’t even come to my wedding (Regular)

Parents trying to “save” my kids (hard-core)

    Jacob:

Thanks for clarifying the regular weekly show will continue as normal.

    BUMBLEBEE:

Its not that I don’t believe you as I’ve been listening to the show since Episode Zero, now I really want to go and listen to the Jurassic Park theme, and I remember Jacob talking about changes coming to the site. I was just confused by the way this was written as he was writing about the “Freebie” level memberships and was unsure if I wouldn’t now need to signup for a login just to get the weekly free show.

    Jacob:

Quick question, will going with the “Freebie” level of membership allow for e-mails to be sent to me whenever someone posts a comment in a thread I’ve posted a comment in myself? I don’t mind coming back from time to time to check on the threads I comment in just to see if someone has replied, but I know I miss things and I hate missing stuff. ;-)

I’m working on a way to track comments more efficiently. Anyone else want this feature?
