The MMR Vaccine / Autism story from start to finish

We’ve covered a lot of the MMR vaccine / autism controversy on the Good Atheist, but I don’t think it’s ever been laid out from start to finish in as concise a format as in this comic from Darryl Cunningham. From major conflicts of interest to falsifying data to the unethical treatment of children (which included colonoscopies and lumbar punctures amongst other unnecessarily shitty tests), there’s 15 pages of information that’ll piss you right off. Thank SpaceGod Andrew Wakefield and his bogus study have been discredited. If you ever want to see the effect a few bad apples can have on our society, look no further than this guy, who’s work has literally led to the resurgence of measles and is one of the major roots of the current anti-immunization movement (a movement many atheists and skeptics subscribe to, sadly enough).

Happily, Dr. Andrew Wakefield is now plain Mr.

I had this discussion with my mum last night. She still refutes this evidence. She claims that lawyers and medical companies (that produce the vaccines) have lied before and could be doing so right now.
She uses the mercury argument (which I hope everyone knows is completly stupid) and the ‘Oh but how come so many kids ‘get’ autism after their shots?’

I really feel like killing myself. She has never bothered to read any medical journals or articles on the subject and I suspect most of her information has come from Jenny McCarthy or Oprah.

    Science damnit.

Just because the medical establishment pushes vaccines doesn’t mean it is “science”.

LET ME CLARIFY: JUST BECAUSE THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT PUSHES VACCINES DOESN’T MEAN IT IS “SCIENCE” AS YOU PUT IT. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT CASE AFTER CASE, CERTAIN, MORE SENSITIVE KIDS GET SCREWED UP BY THE VACCINES AND IT IS BASICALLY A FORM OF RUSSIAN ROULETTE. 95% OF THE TIME, EVERYTHING IS SEEMINGLY FINE. THE ISSUE IS THAT NOT ALL CHILDREN ARE THE SAME AND THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT NEEDS TO PROPERLY ACCESS THE NATURE OF THE CHILD BEFORE BLINDLY ADMINISTERING THESE THINGS. A CHILD MIGHT HAVE A GENETIC PROPENSITY TO A CERTAIN ILLNESS AND THIS ILLNESS IS TRIGGERED BY THE VACCINE. THAT SIMPLE. I’M NOT AGAINST VACCINES BUT I THINK THEY ARE BEING POORLY ADMINISTERED, CONTAIN QUESTIONABLE COMPONENTS, AND, TO A CERTAIN DEGREE, FORCED FOR PROFIT.

Your use of caps aside your holding a massive double standard that I’d like to point out.

Please name a single solitary medicine in the existence of mankind that isn’t as you put it playing russian roulette????

Stumped…. There isn’t one. All medications have risks. All have side effects. It’s beyond stupid to suggest otherwise and do so in capitals.

I child could have a genetic pre disposition. What would you like to do about it????? do genetic screening of all children at birth for a genetic marker that no-one has found yet?

Am I saying things are perfect. No but it’s really silly to say it’s “not science” When you yourself are trying to use reaons that have not and mostly cannot be quantified in any useable fashion.

the one thing that people FAIL to consider with vacines is that you are not immunizing yourself to keep yourself healthy. You are immunizing yourself to keep everyone else healthy and the fact that what you got immuized against doesn’t kill 1,000,000+ people a year like it used to that it might possibly work.

Also what cases of kids got screwed up by vaccines??? I’d love to hear about them. What percent? vs. What percent that would be dead by not taking it?

Your (ab-)use of question marks aside, I’ll try to answer.

Just because I think you need to read this statement Peter Joseph made again:
I’m not against vaccines but I think they are being poorly administrated, contain questionable components, and, to a certain degree, forced for profit.

Russian roulette in my post would mean that the medicine (first off, doesn’t work) actually is making the sick child permanent ill, not: “Ohh, the pills gave me a headache”.

Besides this isn’t 100% my own opinion, to be frank, I don’t really have the bigger picture… I just thought it sounded logical, doctors, medical companies, toy companies, cloth companies, oil companies and so on, want to make money. Lies? Child labor? Declare war for profit? – This have been made over and over again in this shit-ass-capitalistic-worn-out-“society”.

So for a medical company to throw out a vaccine, just a couple of months of important research and testing away/too soon, on the market is something I can guess have, is and will continue happening.

    For example:
We got some new kind of shit-medicine in my home country (it’s called Vitae Pro) and it’s customer area are old people and/or people with “soar” muscles. Many say’s it works fine… But for a hefty ~30$ a month, I’m sure they tell themselves over and over again: It’s just fine!
Now, to my point, It has recently been discovered that the Anti-Oxidants in the pills are actually damaging many of the elderly, rather than helping them. The reason is that the anti-oxidants hinders their bodies to take up their “real” medicine.

And (you guessed right) It’s not the company who makes Vitae Pro that made the new study. Why should they? They were making money on it! *Shocker*

“It’s hard to know today, that if your doctor say’s your kidney has to come out, do it have to come out? Or do the doctor have a new boat to pay off?”

True I went after you a little hard while you say it isn’t necissarily your opinion. You do support it or you wouldn’t have repeated it so strongly. Companies do want to make money. So do you. Should I automatically not trust you because you want me to pay for the goods? I’m not suggesting you lie down and take it.

Also that h1n1 vaccine your refering to wasn’t thrown out with a couple of months of testing. 90% of it was the basic flu vaccine and vaccenis for simular strains had already been created by goverment funded agencies around the world. Several million deaths from the last outbreak motivated them to be prepared.

As for Vita-pro. Great example of gullible people. However, that’s not a vaccine. It’s a commercially avalible over the counter product that by itself does no harm. However, like most medicines there are possible drug interactions. It’s still stupid. However, still not heavily controled and widly researched vaccine administered by medical professionals. There is a reason you can’t mail order vaccines.

Vaccines are all about the big picture. Yes you could have a possible interaction, yes there is a one in a million chance that something bad could happen. There are limited ways to control it.

However, the odds were ‘greater’ than one in a million that something terrible could happen if you didn’t take the vaccine or to someone you love.

the only reason feel safe to not take a vaccine is because they have been working for the past 100 years for certain things.

Not saying we go vaccine happy but when specific vaccines are required…. there is usually a reason for it.
