Draw Mohammed Day off to a good start
May 20, 2010 11:16 am

Here’s my humble entry for this “celebration” of free speech. I’m anxious to see what kind of reaction the Muslim community will have over this. My guess is that there’s going to be a shitload of pointless Fatwas issued tonight. They’ll probably have to make a large spreadsheet or something just to keep track of all the crazy drawings that are appearing all over the place.
Enjoy living in a country where freedom of speech is a right, jackasses.

Ive been following it as well, its going great, however theres an anti-everybody draw mohammed group which has more members:
(http://www.facebook.com/pages/AGAINST-Everybody-Draw-Mohammed-Day/113267462046186?ref=search&sid=682871735.1144228112..1)Their group is grow fast, not that its a competition of “who has the most members is more right”
All it shows is that there are more of them than us and all that does is… suck is supposeI drew one: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4544364&id=682871735

Posted my contribution up at Deviant Art here:
http://aerickduckhugger.deviantart.com/#/d2q1mzyAs well as over at my Live Journal here:
http://duckhugger.livejournal.com/34783.htmlIt seems like a lot of people are participating… but I’m somewhat disappointed in how many artists that I thought might participate who aren’t doing so.
At least it’s a relief that, so far… all the comments I’ve gotten from people on my Mohammed drawing has been positive. No death threats from here yet… anyways.

I’ve got a moderate Muslim friend from the US who was really offended by the idea of this day, and I get the feeling that if I draw anything for it I’ll lose her friendship… She says that this day is a slap in the face to all the non-crazy Muslims who DIDN’T protest Mohammed being in South Park. She sees it as an attack on her religion. I can see where she’s coming from, but in all honesty, I don’t see why having their prophet drawn should be a big deal for moderates. :/ Sure, some of the drawings might be offensive, but if you didn’t mind him being on South Park why would you mind this? And besides, it seems to completely miss the point of the day, which is to celebrate free speech in the face of threats from fundie Muslims.
What are your thoughts on this, Jacob?

Rimon, I’d say you should still go through with it. Just try to be honest with your friend about your motives concerning freedom of speech. I have quite a many Muslims who I’m friends with here at this college in Japan, but I still went through with my own depiction. This is all about banding together and putting our voice (or images in this case) forward. It will be impossible to ever avoid offending everyone. While I don’t particularly enjoy the idea of hurting my Muslim friend’s feelings. It’s not them that I’m aiming at here, it’s a religion and my freedom to lampoon it.
