Increased Religiosity linked to poor morality
Wow, now I know I’ve made the claim religiosity doesn’t make you more moral (and often makes you more racist), but I barely qualify as edutainment, and absolutely no one should ever take me too seriously. How fucking crazy controversial is this study? Religious folks are going to lose their minds over this! Is it wrong I’m secretly happy and feel vindicated for every time some religious douchebag tried to tell me I must be immoral simply because I don’t believe in their Bronze Age God?

ITS ABOUT TIME…

So, what’s new?

This clip has been edited and shows bias.
Here is the whole thing – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxTZv8c_GBM&feature=related

The full version vs the edited version of the video still doesn’t negate the results of the study.
And I’m glad that the paper actually states that religion doesn’t cause immorality, but that there is still a correlation. Only because a lot of us used to be religious before we became atheists/agnostics . Take that apologists!
Spector567
Agreed.
However, this papers has been out since sept 2009.

Nevertheless, it’s a good policy to state the facts… all of it. If one shows any bias (like the apologetics do), they could easily be called out on it. If one simply presents all the facts and let that do the talking, the apologetics will have less (somehow, they always find a way) to refute the evidence with.
Start leaving shit out, and one becomes the enemy.

Makes sense to me. This is two years old though, so I imagine religious people have just decided to ignore it along with everything else.
Reminds me of this statistic on prison population. A prisoner is 50 times less likely to identify themselves as an atheists\agnostic than the public at large:

Which is pretty fucking amazing.

Religionuts are zombies……dangerous yes quite dangerous!
Praise Sagan and pass the ammo.

@Jim: I can’t find the original study of those statistics and, as far as I can tell, neither can anyone else.

If you can find the study please let us know but until you do please don’t bring it up to try and prove a point.
Mike
@Oscar
Actually Jim’s comment makes a lot of sense anyway.
As Atheists are more rational people who reason things out they are less likely to be criminals. Further they are likely to be better at evading the cops as they wouldn’t commit a crime based on the faith of not being caught. They would make a reasonable escape. If you don’t believe me then just watch America’s Dumbest Criminals – none of them can reason and therefore I reason they are religious.
Yes this post was written in jest. I hope you liked it.

Actually it’s almost exactly what a big chunk of Jesus’ preaching was about.
Jim
Okay Oscar chill, wasn’t trying to prove a point. It’s just something I’s heard before and this Post made me think of it. The link I gave was from this article:
http://www.opposingviews.com/i/atheism-rare-among-prison-population
Type in “atheist prison population” into goggle and you get a boat load of them, from various Atheist sites, so it’s either legit or Atheist’s are lying bastards!
Joe Watts
Wow, doesnt make much sense to me dude.

@Jim: You’re right point taken. Thanks for the link.
Lol
Well this is nothing new, move along folks nothing to see here.

i read the journal of religion and society paper a few years ago, it’s 5 years old.

here’s a more recent paper he wrote.

and about being religious in prison, i imagine religious conversions are pretty high in prison, it would probably help around parole time. that’s not to say that atheists would necessarily be converting. i find a lot of people who don’t claim a religion still have a lot of magical thinking which to me precludes atheism.
