Deconversion

Here’s a great video about how one Christian slowly came to realize his religious beliefs were entirely a human invention, and not the result of divine will. Having never believed myself, I find this kind of thing totally fascinating. Also, the music is totally trippy. Be sure to watch it!

That’s a solid video series. It’s very difficult to imagine myself in a Christian’s belief mindset, this kinda helps.

Couldn’t catch the video. the host must have pulled it. Nevertheless, your description reminds me of something else in my life, namely my fundamentalist-ish in-laws. For years they were pretty hardcore, and preaching was their main form of communication, but as the years roll on and they have more experiences, they’ve started to become a little more comfortable with maybe offering a critical perspective on their church life. But here’s the interesting part – my FIL delivers the observations in the same preachy manner he delivered the hard core message, but also, he delivers them as if he’s skilfully uncovered a hidden mystery. I feel like responding, “You know, pal, we in the secular world have a term for those insights – we call it common sense!” For example, the idea that many people and institutions can possess beauty, truth and ethics, and that churches don’t have a monopoly on it – he now presents that idea as if he invented it. I just shake my head …

Oh, just caught the video after all. Not bad, but I’m less into the philosophical arguments for or against God and more into fighting the inflexibility, arrogance and bigotry which seems so inherent in the believer’s social philosophy …
