Irish Atheists go on the offensive

Remember Ireland’s blasphemy law “reform”? A few months ago I reported that the Irish government had proposed changing their existing Defamation Bill (which made blasphemy a crime punishable by jail time) into something a little more profitable. Irish atheists have decided to challenge this new law, which states that any blasphemy can be punished with a fine of up to €25,000. They published a number of quotes from notable artists Bjork, Salman Rushdie and Mark Twain. They hope by baiting the government, they can force them to repeal this insane law.

A person breaks the law by saying or publishing anything “grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion.”

It’s a pretty badass move on their part, and I sincerely hope the government takes the bait. There’s no better way to expose this cowardly law for the free speech killer it is. If religions are so convinced they have the unalterable truth, why the fuck are they so scared of dissent? If they really do have the truth, wouldn’t they benefit from us challenging them if we’re so wrong? Weaksauce.

I’m from Ireland and an Atheist and it’s really annoying knowing that uf you question their faith you get in trouble and they can then in reply call my views ridiculous. To be fair one of the bishops admitted it was not an equal law for excluding the protection of the views of the atheists as it only protects religion. But I’m only 15 and I can’t go to any of the campaigns.:(

Since religion thrives on indoctrination, it makes sense that they would be scared about dissent. But the main reason is that a lot of religious people know that their beliefs are ridiculous if actually made to contemplate them, so any opposition becomes blasphemy, defamation, or discrimination. And those involved as some sort of clergy usually already know or have some idea that their religion is bullshit but claim blasphemy anyway. And those in the papacy know for a FACT that their religion is bullshit, but thwart any public opposition that will result in the Church losing geopolitical power; the horror!

Go for it guys Looks like someone has been asleep at the wheel BIG TIME to allow allow a blasphemy law to exist in Ireland in 2010.

I can find it hard to believe how backward your government must be.
Or create a religion where sending letters is blasphemy , when the government inevitably sends one sue them.
