You might be wondering why Will Smith is a Scientologist (perhas you thought, as I did, that he would be too smart to fall for their scam). I think after watching this video, you’ll have your answer: he’s quite fantastically stupid, and his pseudo philosophical rantings only makes sense if you have the mental faculties of a 3 year old. I enjoy your movies Will, but if you think that anyone is seriously interested in your retarded opinions, you’re in for a nasty surprise. Watching this video is painful and embarrassing for humanity as a whole.

November 10th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
He was cool during the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, but now I have lost all respect for him.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Everything I know about Scientology, I learned from South Park, so forgive me if I didn’t pick up on any mantra or buzzwords from Will’s spiel. Scientology has always seemed like such a silly concept that it hasn’t warranted my time to study it even as a skeptic. I figure that puts me right about where most Americans are in terms of understanding what sounds like a pretty hardcore-crazy religion. With that said, I actually like what Will has to say here and think that most people aren’t going to draw a lot of connections to Scientology, even though he tried to make his comments sound “metaphysical”.
In spite of the bravado he displays on his rap albums, Will seems like a really down-to-earth sort of guy who hasn’t had a lot of the negative celebrity spotlight that many other stars have had. He seems like a good family man, and I can respect that; granted, that may VERY well be due to a killer publicity team, but all we know is what we know, right?
If Will’s goal is to embody the trope that “You can be/do anything you put your mind to if you work hard and study”, i don’t see the harm. Will Smith is a larger-than-life figure for a lot of people, and if he encourages people to become the captains of their own destiny, then great. Even as a serious atheist, I don’t see the harm in that. We should all take that kind of responsibility for our lives.
Did I miss something major here? I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d ever be a Will Smith apologist, so I’m feelin’ kinda funny right now…
November 10th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
And I to think that I liked the guy =\
November 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Oh, i didn’t know – i thought he had a functioning brain – a pity because i used to like his films – now i wont’ be able to watch them without thinking that the guy is a complete gullible moron.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Anyone who needs to use the word “retarded” to describe someone they don’t agree with, is an idiot. You lost me there. Maybe if you actually knew a retarded person you’d choose your words more carefully.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
All religion is stupid and dangerous. Scientology is neither better nor worse than the rest.
That’s no excuse for Will or his colleagues, though.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I am with Robert on this one. I don’t think his message is bad, unless he is talking purely metaphysical or The Secret type crap.
And Robert, if you want to learn more about Scientology, Jake goes over it a few times in the podcast. Try TGA episode 9 and Bonus episode 16, two of my favorite eps.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Oh wow! He’s one step away from the couch jumping.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
What is it about acting that makes Scientology attractive? that’s what I’d like to know.
November 10th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
“two plus two equals four only if you accept it” now that’s getting jiggy with it
November 10th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
If you’re going to call someone a name like that, at least have the courage to sign your real name to the post. Honesty, man. How are you going to degrade someone like that? And what is with all the curse words and references to derogatory reference to disabled folks? If that is what atheism is all about, just putting people down and spewing hate, who would want to be a part of that? You’re actually selling religion when you take such a vitriolic stance towards successful people with opinions that don’t necessarily jibe with your own.
I like Will Smith, and while I think he struggles to communicate his ideas, I knew what he was trying to say, and I respect his passion, honesty, and conviction immensely.
November 10th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Mark, this is your last fucking warning. Stop telling people how to talk, or I’ll ban you. I told you before: the one rule here is that you aren’t allowed to complain about how people talk on this site. I’m sick and fucking tired of you telling everyone else that their use of language is inappropriate. Got it?
November 10th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
@Mark, @Robert
Will Smith is a Scientologist, who aren’t worthy of any respect whatsoever. Their beliefs include aliens and spirits on people’s faces, how does that merit respect?
Of course people should take responsibility for their actions, but you don’t need a cult to tell you that.
@Jacob
You’re telling him that he can’t tell others how to talk, when you’re doing the same thing to him?
And don’t ban him, he has the freedom of speech too, even if I don’t argee with it. Chill?
November 10th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Issac, what Jacob was saying was that he’s sick of Mark acting like using “curse words” is such a bad thing and then lecturing people about their usage of such words. If people so choose to use the words, than it’s their own business.
Honestly, I don’t see what’s the matter with saying fuck, shit, damn, or any other “curse” words. Why is it such a big deal to Christians?
November 10th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Issac, this site isn’t a democracy, and I mentioned before that I don’t want people making endless reference to the use of strong language on the site. If you think this rule is “tyrannical”, then I don’t know what to tell you.
November 10th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
erm – he doesn’t mention scientology once? OK it’s a bit couch jumpy… but come on.
A quick google shows that he has donated to scientology and also to other religions and apparently doesn’t feel tied to any of them – suspicious, yes, but proof of cult membership? no.
I call BS.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Like all sports people and actors and such public people, Will is no different then most of them. The problem comes from OUR belief that they are smarter/special. They are just dumb-ass morons doing a job. They are just smart enough to ask for lots of money and WE(general public) allow them the power and money. Many people give them credit for intelligence they have not earned. When they open their mouth and let words fall out, they have no more credit then for anyone else saying it. Like why was he being interviewed??? Not because of his intelligence and knowledge!!!!
We – the general public – have to stop giving them credibility, they must earn it. Whoops!!! sorry did I say general public??? you know the group that believes in a bearded fairy in the sky, that explains his popularity. As an actor he does very well, as a person he is just another member of the general public.
November 10th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
@Isaac
Freedom of speech is one of those things that requires an asterik. It should be: “Freedom of speech so long as it is not interfering with the freedom of others.” We have banned hate crimes for that reason. The annual KKK march in the US is a prime example of what happens when people are allowed to say whatever they want about their hateful ideologies. They literally have a parade telling people that anyone with a different pigmentation of skin is a lesser being and should be enslaved or killed, and it’s perfectly legal because they are not doing it (during the parade, that is).
November 10th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I actually agree with this quote:
“If that is what atheism is all about, just putting people down and spewing hate, who would want to be a part of that?”
i also think this video demonstrated a very surprisingly shallow intellect. But i’m not going to stop enjoying will’s movies over it. He’s a talented actor.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
I’m still pissed about the Wild Wild West movie and song. I can get over the Scientology, but i can never get back those 90 + 3 minutes I spent watching and listening to that crap.
Also, I watched Independence day a few months ago – not as good as I remember. Fuck you Will Smith, most of your music and movies don’t age well.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Isaac: “Will Smith is a Scientologist, who aren’t worthy of any respect whatsoever. Their beliefs include aliens and spirits on people’s faces, how does that merit respect?”
That is a good example of poisoning the well. The gist of what he was akwardly stumbling through isn’t all that different from the message a motivational speaker gives to elementary school kids: Shoot for the stars, you can do anything yay! etc.. Believing in something ridiculous does not necessarily mean everything they believe is ridiculous. Some good examples include: Francis Collins – Evangelical christian & headed the human genome project. Kenneth Miller – Roman catholic & biology professor. He helped refute the I.D. proponents in the Dover trail.
It looks like he is being sincere and there’s nothing wrong with encouraging people to better themselves. However I also think he is very naive, sure the universe will get out of your way when you have a lot of money to throw at it. Aside from talking about magic and redefining math, his message is merely that of encouragement. There really isn’t much to bash him for in this particular video aside from him being intellectually lacking (this describes a shitload of people in Hollywood). Watching a video that has nothing to do with scientology and then bashing him for being a scientologist is Ray Comfort style debating.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Scientology is about tricking them and then separating them from their money. Will Smith is advertising this idea when he speaks well of Scientology and therefore is in part responsible when The Church of Scientology confuses people and then takes their money.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:49 am
An fucking idiot? You’re on the money, but at least get your headline right. It undermines your credibility and power to criticise if the basics of English are not observed. He is a fucking idiot, or he is an idiot.
November 11th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
^Thanks for pointing it out CJAussie. I originally just wrote that he was an idiot, but later decided to add fuck in there and forgot to make the change. It happens!
November 11th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Not to go for the easy joke, but I’m curious: what specific theatens did the vampires in I Am Legend have plaguing them?
ALTERNATIVE PUNCHLINE: Why did they cut the scenes with the e-meter out of The Legend of Bagger Vance?
November 29th, 2009 at 12:19 am
And to think, I remember when he said his greatest goal in life was to have a film repertoire as great as that of Tom Cruise.
November 29th, 2009 at 12:59 am
He took a long way to simply say what has been said a million times: focus and dedication will lead to goals.
If you can decide on a goal and work every day at it, there is a good percentage chance that you will succeed, even after many many years…
Anyone that understands history knows the greatest success requires steadfast tenacity and clear goals.
It is every actor’s story, never take no for an answer..
Most people stay depressed or lose sight of their goal with only very little rejection.
He is trying to be a ‘beacon’ of what is possible if you keep your mind on something and work hard.
November 29th, 2009 at 1:01 am
A beacon is an intentionally conspicuous device designed to attract attention to a specific location, in this case: Will Smith’s ass
November 29th, 2009 at 1:06 am
I think you guys are beating him up for nothing.
He is not articulate but is more than an idiot.
FOR PROOF:
He is an idiot all the way to the bank more than everyone on this blog put together.
November 29th, 2009 at 1:08 am
You can cry about it all you want you can never match his success to even wash his balls.. sounds like sour grapes to me.
no pun intended
November 29th, 2009 at 1:41 am
I know this most likely will not be received well, but I understand the idea that he is trying to convey. Will is attempting (poorly) to show how people are in control of their own destiny. He outlines making a plan, and once you actually commit to that route, you can shape your future until you get where you want.
It’s a fairly optimistic and almost seemingly absurd idea, but if you put it into context it’s a little easier to wrap your head around (not in a demeaning way either, it’s actually fairly complex). Say, for example, you wanted to become famous. Well first, define famous. There are a number of ways to be famous. As an athlete, sports fans will know all about you, as a professor or researcher, you can be famous based on your research, as an actor or actress, a noble prize winner, a Christian Rock singer, the inventor of disc golf, the designers of building, bridges, etc, etc. There are so many variations of famous. Once you find where your strengths are, you can focus on that path. As you meet people along the way and get closer to your goal, as long as you stay committed and never give up, you truly can shape your future. And while I believe Will takes it a little far, since there can only be one on top so not everyone can shape an ideal future; his message I think is that “if we can identify our strengths and use them to work towards a goal, then we really can achieve them…” what we lack is the will to sacrifice and the will to fail to settle. Look at your life, if you really wanted your dream, and spend most of your time, every day, pursuing that dream, ignoring how long it’ll take, how boring the process is, putting off TV, xbox, world of warcraft, wii and Hulu, and really getting on it. Could you get to your goal? How about damn close?
I think that’s what Will’s trying to convey; but shit, I’m so god damn baked outta my mind right now, I hardly make sense to myself. Will probably was too, that’s the only way I think anyone would’ve made any sense out of it.
November 29th, 2009 at 1:43 am
Oh, let’s all jump down Will’s throat because we don’t understand the Tao and how willpower affects the immediate perception.
Go read or something.
November 29th, 2009 at 2:18 am
ok, so will seems kinda baked a little here. i agree with who cares and jeff, above. basically, this ideology is an outgrowth of est and the forum,, and if you go way back, some of the principles of the 12 step programs. essentially, allow for possibility. when will is talking about 2 + 2 = 4, because we as a society have agreed upon this and this is how it shows up in our languaging. Something exists because we say it does exist as we call it. If we all agreed to call a chair a table for instance, we would know a chair as a table. capice? anyway, even michael jordan still practices his hoops every day. our society has come to believe that things come, and go easily. we need to go back to earnest hard work, and dreams, and working hard to fulfill goals, but keeping in mind that, as he says, these dreams can be obtained – we need to keep our eyes on the “prize”, stay focused, and envision the future we can live into.
November 29th, 2009 at 2:35 am
he is talking about “Law of Attraction” not Scientology.
It is philosophy. Read the book called “The master Key system” or “The Secret” you may understand what hes talking about.
November 29th, 2009 at 3:38 am
Mr. Smith, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
November 29th, 2009 at 3:40 am
You are all as stupid as anything for caring about Will Smith that much. You are obviously obsessed with the man. He obviously holds some position to say this shit if that many people are listening to him. He knows a lot of people will hear him, and he’s gonna be dead in 30 years. Why not spill his heart out to millions while he can? Sure, a more modest person wouldn’t do this..but he’s obviously not very modest if he’s a hollywood movie star. That job in itself pretty much screams “ego-maniac”.
November 29th, 2009 at 3:57 am
What’s with all the ridiculous tags over the video?
November 29th, 2009 at 4:08 am
Smith is appearing on a PBS interview show that features blacks and political issues of relevance to blacks, no doubt for a black audience. I think many blacks, under-represented, maligned, imprisoned, humiliated, undereducated, and poor, want to hear about what makes Will Smith tick. He is, after all, one of the most successful black men in America. Given the misery, you have to respect that.
His claims have nothing to do with Scientology. It is about faith in the possibility of choice on the one hand, and fate on the other. Although free will is something Christianity has made a central feature of their moral view of life, it is a general philosophical problem. Are we determined by fate, or does human agency have a role to play? Will Smith sides, for reasons he does not give in this video, on the side of human agency.
Oh, and he’s not a Scientologist.
http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,22873878-5005368,00.html
Some atheists, especially the self-described rationalist kind who have a great deal of faith in science, have failed to crack open their philosophy textbooks, and do not realize the questions religions posed are not entirely baseless, even if their answers may well be wrong. And some of you are just stupid.
November 29th, 2009 at 4:23 am
As far as I can tell from that clip Will Smith is just professing a commendable belief in positive thinking, self-motivation and goal-setting. I’m an agnostic but he doesn’t mention Scientology once here, and from what I gathered he is a well-spoken man with great ideals and a unique energy – no need to hate somebody because they don’t stick to a purely mechanistic world view – that’s what keeps us human. Chill out – zealous athiests are just as scary as religious bigots.
November 29th, 2009 at 6:06 am
Hey Jacob, if you’re able to track IP’s of posters, check out the IP’s of the multitude of posts made today and see how many were the same person… I’m curious
November 29th, 2009 at 6:08 am
He’s going down the same road as Tom Cruise and it will not end well for him.
November 29th, 2009 at 8:49 am
Anyone who needs to use the word “idiot” to describe someone they don’t agree with, is a retard. You lost me there. Maybe if you actually knew an idiot you’d choose your words more carefully.
November 29th, 2009 at 11:25 am
Shit, i am Brazilian and have read The Alquimist by Paulo Coelho, and it’s the lamest, redundant, lazy…well just plain bad writing. he was a great song writer of the 60’s but has been trying to be a Guru of some sort.
I can’t understand what makes hollywood types seem so drawn to Scientology….Maybe Pure pressure? Why don’t they turn to philosophy…oh they want easy answers. Not questioning themselves.
November 29th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Now, this is the story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became a scientologist priest of a celebrity center
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of school
When a couple of girls
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I took one little stress test and my thetans were way up there
She said ‘You’re movin’ with Cruise and Travolta to Celebrity Center’
November 29th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
John’s right. Smith isn’t a Scientologist. From his comments it sounds to me like Smith has been reading the New Age book THE SECRET.
November 29th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Sadly brainwashing doesn’t work by exploiting low intelligence, it works by emotional manipulation. Being smart isn’t a defense against being brainwashed. So writing off anyone who has been unfortunate enough to get trapped in a cult as somehow ‘being stupid enough to deserve it’ is unhelpful, because that also implies that they’re ‘too stupid to deserve help in escaping’.
Don’t jump to a conclusion about things that you know nothing about.
November 29th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
You know I can understand making fun of people with different religious beliefs when they’re actively negatively affecting you. But this man is simply explaining his convictions to the best of ability, why does this make him stupid? This is why people generally feel Atheists are an intolerable bunch.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
This is just like the Tom Cruise ‘ I can fly’…. got bored within a few moments of this nonsense…..
December 24th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Fuck you Will Smith!!! Your talentless son is going to ruin the Karate Kid. Why the fuck are they making a remake? The movie needs no remaking especially from some dickheads like Will Smith and his worthless son Jaden.
December 28th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Never at ANY point in this video did he claim to believe in Scientology. I agree with him 100%. He is simply saying if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.
December 30th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
anything that you think can come to reality? maybe, but not through his means.
January 5th, 2010 at 11:19 am
Most of you are judgmental assholes. If you watch the entire interview, it will make a little more sense. And to those of you who don’t understand what he’s saying, well your capacity for thought must be that of a close-minded 4 year old. Will Smith has specifically stated that he is not a Scientologist (yes, recently and since this video). What Will Smith is referring to in this video is a quite popular book called The Alchemist which talks about how to basically change yourself into who you want to be. Pretty Eastern Spiritualistic stuff. Taken out of context, I understand how you might be quick to misunderstand what he’s saying here, but quick to judge? That just makes you an ignorant fuckhead.
January 10th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
Will Smith didn’t say he was a scientologist dumbasses. He’s saying he understands the concepts but he doesn’t agree entirely with it…he is a christian.
And so what if he’s a scientologist? Why would you hate on him for that? Sure the idea of an alien as a creator sounds doubtful….but in that regard, I would say the idea of a bearded man who watches over us is equally silly.
January 14th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
wow all that “2+2= whateva you want it to be” crap is scarily reminiscent of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, when Winston has to force himself to believe that 2+2=5
January 16th, 2010 at 8:51 am
If he has those beliefs why do you have to be against him?
He has the right to believe. I think you’re an ignorant person who
doesnt see anything further away than his own way of thinking.
I think you should listen more and stop talking, beause the real intelligent people are the ones who listen first and think.
Not just put forward arguments that you make up straigh away.
A person that doen’t believe or have hope in something.. why would you even live? what would you live for?
and last of all, why do you interpretate his words as in something negative, when all this man does is create posibility,hope.. ideas.
good, positive ideas, not like you materialist ideas.
And.. don’t insult people.. that will never benefit you.. it will only make you a worst person.
If you were clever you would listen to your heart, not just base everything on what you can see but also in your soul…
If the first thing you think is junking these words away.. then you will carry on being the same.. and the whole purpose of live is enrich your soul and take a step forward every time.
If you have actually read this.. thankyou.
January 25th, 2010 at 6:34 am
No wonder Tom Cruise made a beeline for this guy!

Anyone into Scientology is by definition a retard. Buying into an well established fraud, giving them your money and even trying to give them credibility are the action of a retarded , disingenuous snake oil selling dick.
I spit on Scientology and will smith pweeewh
January 26th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
it is less intellectually mature to verbally chastize a person for saying something stupid, than it is to simply say something stupid. you solipsistic piss ants with infintile maturity levels need to realize hes an actor, always has been, life has never forced him to question the ideas of the impossible, meanwhile however, there are children like you. who because you realize some shadow of truth, think that your what.. better than him? get over yourselves, the guy makes people happy. you all do nothing but talk. either wake up or grow up. im never coming back to this page again, you idiots have reminded me why both sides of the spectrum, both thiests and athiests are missing the big picture. good night
January 27th, 2010 at 11:50 am
Separate the man from the beliefs. As an actor he is outstanding. As a businessman he is too. His beliefs are his own, I don’t care about those while I watch his films. If he and I were discussing religion I would not keep referring to his films.
Also, with respect not all slaves are or were black. I am descended from white slaves who were enslaved during the Crusades. My ancestors were a mild tanned colour and I am white as snow.
To the person who said all religion is rubbish or words to that effect, believe what you want and so will I, that is the freedom that matters most. There is plenty of room for both beliefs.

Will Smith Interested in the Presidency
http://www.showbizspy.com/article/198619/will-smith-plans-career-in-politics.html
“Will is thinking about going into politics,” Jada said. “He once said he could imagine becoming a US president. He wasn’t joking, he was quite serious about it.”
…
She wants the education system in the US reformed and is prepared to campaign for change.
“Will and I want to leave traces on this planet – and with that I mean more important traces than just films,” she said.”‘
So the Smiths want to reform the educational system, is that it? Do they want it to be based on L Ron Hubbard’s Study Tech, the way they insist their own private school is run? Let’s not forget, when the head of New Village Leadership Academy objected to Study Tech as a worthless educational method, they fired her and brought in a Scientologist (TM) to replace her.
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2009/08/exclusive-will-jada-new-school-head-practiced-scientology
@N Blackmore
You can’t separate a Scientologist from their beliefs, any more than you can separate a Mormon politician from their beliefs. (See: Mormon politicians doing their best to wreck gay marriage in the US). You know in the TC video where he says that the thing you need to know to truly understand him is that “I am a Scientologist”? That’s not just him. That is the raison d’être for a true believer. That is why people have been so concerned, playing the is he/isn’t he game.
Most tangibly here is Will’s support for Study Tech in his involvement in education. Scientology states that Study Tech is for the purpose of disseminating Scientology around this planet.

The Alchemist? What a horrible book! Really! It’s drivel! For shame, Will.
January 30th, 2010 at 4:00 am
Is Scientology drugging all these celebrities, or are most actors just fucking stupid?
January 30th, 2010 at 4:11 am
If you claim to embrace a religion, and talk about it in the media, especially if your influence is so great, you have a responsibility to understand what it is. Especially if you have a direct line to the President of the United States, fer crikeys. And especially if you are teaching children with a fraud method developed by a lunatic. It is not acceptable to inflict your uneducated opinions on others. Saying it is 98% like the Bible is ruthlessly dishonest.
Props to the person who gathers and sits through the dozens of hours of recorded gobbledygook to do this:

Granted the man is a Scientologist but there is little difference in what he proposes in all its inarticulate puppydoginess to what Einstein noted as the gradual realization of knowledge both scientific or otherwise that whatever we imagine, is or will with enough knowledge be possible. In a very short time we’ve seen Black men and women go from the shed to the White house, Gay men from the closet to the pulpet and women from the kitchen to the boardroom. I find Scientology obscure and fuzzy like every religion but Buddhism but there is no harm in believing in possibilities..
February 17th, 2010 at 1:54 am
There are many possibilities worth believing in, that can touch you and expand your mind. The advances you name are wonderful, and IMHO occurring way too slowly. What Will is talking about has nothing to do with science or achievement. He’s not really talking about anything.
If you think that Scientology is simply harmless, I suggest you visit some of the links in the comments above. Scientology is heavily weighted with thought-stopping ideas that leave people confused and brainwashed.
As to the wonder of possibilities, have at it. I like to start here

Will Smith is not a scientologist and even if he were it would be his business. You know like freedom of speech, freedom of religion. He is smart and i got what he was saying. With success comes much hateration. Too bad , you are the idot with a closed mind. God save America!
February 17th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
PS: Will was attempting to be diplomatic and not down any one’s religion. He is certainly no dummy and actually quite intelligent. And when people like you all say you are not going to see a movie because you think the actor is a scientologist, it is laughable! Who gives a rat’s behind that you don’t support Will?! There are those of us that get it. You clowns obviously don’t perhaps because you see the world thru white glasses. Any person on this earth has the write to worship as they please. Period. Enough said. Just go on and say what really bugs you about Will. At the end of the day what matters is that he is a decent guy and a good father, husband , friend and son and not a bad actor either. I say rock on Will Smith and continue to do you with your bad self! There will always be that fraction that hate no matter what. Just know next month they will be hating on you because you wore an orange shirt. Continue to work your craft and become better and better . That’s how you throw dirt in the face of these grade school drop outs that mostly hate you because you made a little money and happen to be African American. Many of them also wear sheets at night! This is probably the same bunch that hate the pres. and yet he inherited a mess but that is another channel. They can also be people who go to confession or worship snakes yet they feel they are the ultimate judge. Obviously they don’t read the bible. HATE has no bounds . You rumps sicken me because just be real. You don’t like Will Smith and it has nothing to do with his beliefs which again are his own. Any postive man black or white , you probably hate because you have no life, haven’t done s–t and will never do s–t. At least anything of importance so you go thru life sour and ugly. You continue to tear this country down with your hatred but you can stop the I Hate Will Smith campaign because he is too sweet a guy .
February 24th, 2010 at 6:42 am
I don’t care what Will Smith’s religion is, I like him. He’s a good guy. If you could just try to understand whatever he’s saying better and deeper, then you’d know he has made some good points.
I don’t get people believing Scientology either, but i respect people who has any kind of believe and wanting to learn more of life rather than those who DON’T understand at all. Any religions in this world, though they may seem very different, they have the same purpose. They just communicate things differently and understood differently by different people. So who cares about who believes in what?
RESPECT EVERYONE!
Even though i don’t agree with some who disrespect people with nasty comments, I still respect you for having opinions. Even some who don’t actually have opinions but say things anyway, I still respect you for trying to have opinions. Even some who just read/watch things happen, I still respect you for at least care about what’s happening. Even those who don’t read nor care about what’s happening, I still respect you for being ignorant and keep the peace exist.
EVERYONE in this world deserve to be respected in some ways!

And I thought fucking religious fanatics were scary. You guys all have your head so far up your scientific asses you’ve failed to see the fucking fact that unlike you people some people speak meta-fucking-phorically. Get of you high Equus Fucking Caballus wipe your obviously scentless shit from your eyes and stop being such crazy fucking zealots!
Oh and grow the fuck up. Everybodies fucking wrong on the internet except you… those odds haven’t hinted at something yet? Thats fucking right you’re the sole intelligent person who knows everything about the fucking universe. Happy fucking birthday you’re god.

@May
I refuse to respect people who forward organizations that incorporate poor education, coerced abortions, and child labor. Are you saying I should just chill out and let people do whatever they want, and respect them for it? Respect needs to be earned. I see the last few commenters don’t really understand what’s at issue here. And a couple of these commenters just seriously make me nervous.
March 17th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
I am beginng to REALLY HATE Hollywood … just because someone has talent, they think they are also smart enough and should be entitled to larger voice than anyone else … and you know what, people fall for it and continue to give their money to them! When someone comes across like they are entitled to be the spokesperson for me … I turn them off. That “cool person” on the Prince of Bel Air was scripted … who doesn’t get that? You got it right CybrgnX, their talented and that is all … it’s their job, they get paid foro it and if they weren’t talented no one would hire them … that doesn’t mean they should rule the world.
March 17th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
I kind of feel sorry for Will … didn’t his publicist every tell him to avoid talking about politics and religion? He might be sincere, but it doesn’t come across well because he doesn’t really understand it. Alchemy in the modern world is chemistry (sorry, 2+2 DOES equal 4), but in the ancient world they were trying to convert lead or other materials to gold … couldn’t do it.
What he was so ineloquently tryingn to say and attributing to religion is that when someone has reached a point that they honestly and truly “know themselves”, then they can much more easily put aside fear, guilt, control, anger, and a whole host of other negative thoughts AND when they do that their life seems better and things flow better. I mean really, anybody who isn’t stressed out, angry, and worried all the time feels better …
March 17th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Tim, I get the metaphors completely … I love metaphors … but, do you realize you completely lose your personal power every time you go on an angry cussing bing … think about it, dude, people are expressing their opinions here and some may be more mature or better thought out than others, but if you have a rational opinion state it without being quite to obnoxious about it.
And May, I totally agree with you … respect has to be earned. What you are saying is very similar to the confusion over the absurd misunderstanding and overuse of the term “love” … I really hate it when religions use the phrase “love your neighbor”, but have a clue what they really means. I can totally DISPISE what someone does or says, but at the same time understand that we all say and do things that is contrary to someone elese’s point of view. If someone does something truly dispicable, however, I may want to seriously end their life but there is a part of me that recognizes that this individually is one of several things … really stupid, misguided, insane, angry to the point of blindness, ignorant, etc. and because of what condition they are in are really suffering greatly. Their suffering or misguided perception doesn’t mean they have the right to coerce or inflict harm on other and it certainly doesn’t mean I should respect them.
March 17th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
BTW, sorry I’ve invaded The Good Atheist’s site today, but oddly enough I find more commonality in how I view the world here than I do on religious websites … I’m right with you in terms of distrusting and disliking what the religious right has to say about most things. I appreciate a lot of the point of view on this website.
Also, please excuse my typos, but hopefully you get my meaning … I type too fast in between working, so I’m not proofing … I’ll try to do better.
March 28th, 2010 at 11:46 am
This one actually kind of, breaks my heart. Will Smith is one of the few celebrities which I had a real respect for. I thought he had a bit of sence! I have to say, accepting his death will be difficult to deal with.
Honestly, i cant and wont watch this, but thank you for bringing the truth once more.
April 2nd, 2010 at 9:47 pm
Jesus Christ. How on earth do you know what message he was trying to impart Robert? You seem to have done a lot of filling in the gaps. Aside from a few well placed and expressive hand body and hand gestures, the Smith was almost completely unable to communicate a single lucid thought. “I wanna… I wanna…. (heavy breathing, cycles hand in frustration as though attempting to crank the words out, head shaking) I wanna…. repreSENT… an iDEA…”
Just as well that’s all he wants, coz if his deepest wish was to be able to communicate an idea, there’d be tears before bedtime.
Stick to acting babe. Actually scrap that, stick to clapping and dancing.

May: please die immediately.

Reading further into this and having actually watched the video, all i really have is a sigh. Never thought he was super intellegent but, never an idiot either.

reply: What you or i say is right, doesn’t mean others agree with it. Everybody have different opinion and meaning to what right or wrong is. If you don’t want to or can’t respect others because they have different believes with what you have, at least give respect to this world by keeping the peace. When people fight over whose beliefs are the right-est, they don’t relise, there are others around them who aren’t suppose to be involved in this matter at all that might become victim of anger and violence… *again, this is just my opinion, what i think is right, you might disagree* and i’m totally cool with that.

This shows that Will is a very good actor. He had a lot of people believing he was an intelligent and thoughtful person. But we see that, along with John Travolta and Tom Has-Been Cruise, he’s just another mindless sucker.
Anyone who falls for Scientology is even more of a moron that other theists.
May 17th, 2010 at 12:54 am
WOW…….WOW..Well for starters Will Smith is gone. And after reading all the comments I believe some of the respondets are also gone…in the head. Religion is a crutch nothing more. The more you need the worst off you are. Bye Bye Will to abscurity.
May 21st, 2010 at 2:31 am
Wow, whatever idiot added all of those little statements during Smith’s monologue must be pretty smart…it thoroughly distracts the view from what he is actually saying.
Not to say that I am a believer in Scientology (or anything), but this clip was OBVIOUSLY taken out of context and therefore can not be taken seriously.
June 5th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
If you wsnt to let us know what someone is like, you shouldat least honor the person by letting him speak without some asshole giving us subtitles.
I listened a second time…without looking. He doesn’t in this video, say anything that warrants ridicule of the kind intended.
June 5th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Will Smith is intelligent. A man who says many things to appeal to almost everyone. As an actor…it’s a good career choice. We have nothing to lose, can say whatever the hell we like. Makes almost no difference to anythin.
June 10th, 2010 at 6:05 pm
Are you kidding me? Everything he is saying is true. It’s been told over and over throughout time..I don’t get why you’re bashing him. He’s exactly right and it has nothing to do with Scientology. I don’t get it. Maybe if people actually went out and read a book sometime, they would come across this. It’s not man-made and if you really try it, then you see that it works. But all you do is judge. Maybe if you were more open-minded, you wouldn’t be so blind. And don’t start cursing at me, and of course you’re aloud to have your own opinion. But you’re not even listening to what he’s saying. This is sad …what people have become in this world.
June 10th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
It’s not even religion. It’s spirituality and that’s what no one has. It’s more important and more beneficial than religion, because you spread love instead of hate.
June 22nd, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Get smith a teleprompter! The other “smartest colored man” in the room uses one. Don’t you understand how this works-the puppet master pulls the strings and the dummy dances. Our so-called culture glorifies “folks” that either pretend to be someone else or wish they were.Thank God all Americans aren’t so stupid. Oh, mister barry sotoro, stop calling us “folks”; that’s a black thing and you’re only half.
June 25th, 2010 at 8:33 am
Nobody wants to believe Will would really fall for the scientology bit. Like most people, I find him to be a perfectly likable guy. But I wonder if he has anyone in his life who will reign him in when he starts thinking off kilter. There are plenty of people who tell me when I’m being stupid. But Will bumps elbows with the president and celebrities and he could buy…well, anything. Plus his wife is also a celebrity (sort of). Her I don’t get the same grounded sense from.
Who knows? His rah-rah speech about wishing 2+2 into fiveness is not “too” crazy I suppose. Typical motivational nonsense. But, at the same time, there’s nothing in it that tells me the guy is safe from magical thinking. I don’t want to believe it either, a warm smile goes a long way.
June 25th, 2010 at 8:43 am
Oh yeah, not that I believe everything I read in “gossip” rags, or that I read them at all for that matter. But this story made the rounds and it’s just another piece of crap on the scientology heap. Combined with his “2+2″ speech, I just can’t look at him without thinking about it. I still blame his wife…

June 28th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
Holy Crap he is an idiot. 2 + 2 is what you want it to be?
June 28th, 2010 at 2:49 pm
The harm with this sort of thing is that it does make people stupid. I’ve got friends who are teachers who, even in courses like math, have students who when they get answers wrong argue that the answer is a matter of opinion, or who can’t believe they’re failing a class because they really, really want to pass or becuase they have faith that they should pass the class–but that’s all they do, have faith, they don’t do the work. This sort of thing, like “The Secret” are dangerous. They do cause harm.
June 28th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
@ May The idea that we have to respect people’s beliefs is ridiculous. The idea that all people’s beliefs are right is even more ridiculous. If someone believes gay people should be stoned to death I don’t have to respect that belief. If someone believes that women should be forced to carry all pregnancies to term–even if it will kill the mother I don’t have to respect that. If someone believes that there was a wizard who threw a bunch of aliens in a volcano and the spirits of those aliens inhabit our bodies and cause evils I don’t have to respect that. If people believe that victoms of genocide, torture and rape are responsible for their own victimization because they somehow brought it on themselves I don’t have to respect that.
June 28th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
@ Sofia Saying something is true over and over won’t make it so. “Spirituality” is a pretty loose definition and usually leads to some pretty flaky ideas.
It’s great to encourage children to go for their dreams–but we should also encourage them to know that 2 + 2 = 4. That might help them achieve those dreams.
June 29th, 2010 at 10:07 pm
Who ever made this video WITH THE CAPTIONS IN IT! is a stupid bitch. Will smith is a great guy.And at the first captions it says…nvm its just captions saying lies.He does not do Scientology things y’all just suggest to dawg all the black people with what they do and how they do it.And one of the captions say “can i be a white person on CNN” bullshit plain racism. Why do it again. White people are being races to black people. Do you see black people on YouTube saying look at the white people doing that or doing this.
June 29th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
I mean racist.
June 30th, 2010 at 10:31 am
Since Scientology is a form of Atheism – it shows that the Atheists are just as dumb for being part of the same sect and they even insulted Scientology where its followers don’t believe in God either so by doing so; they insulted themselves.
ENJOY HELL ATHEISTS!
June 30th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
@ Peace Maker–so you’re a good friend of Will Smith? You hang out?
@ Someone–Scientology is a form of atheism so that proves atheists are dumb?
Mormonism is a form of theism–so that proves theists are dumb.
July 23rd, 2010 at 3:24 pm
All atheist are bad people, they deserve to die painfully, theists have more sense than you! THEY WERE RIGHT YOU SHOULD BURN IN HELL!!!
August 1st, 2010 at 5:47 am
If 2+2 can be anything you want it to be, then I want to buy a house off Will Smith for $10,000,000. I will count the money in two piles of two million each and say to Will “There you go Will! Thats two million, plus two million for a total of ten million”. Let’s see if 2+2 has any objective reality for him then.
August 9th, 2010 at 6:03 am
Wow didn’t know math was up to personal interpretation. Theist aren’t really good with logic anyway. Makes sense that they would think they could change arithmetic, they already think they can change the laws of natures, physics, etc.
August 17th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
Wow, I kinda liked this guy, he looked ok to me before I saw this retarded statement.
And “The Alchemist” is one of his most fav books??? Please, this is one of the most mediocre books ever written. Full of cliches and written as for idiots.
August 18th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Damn, I had no idea. I liked him too.
August 18th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
Damn, I had no idea. I liked him too. Oh well
September 2nd, 2010 at 8:46 pm
To those who are defending this tripe, if he had wanted to say that everything is possible if you work hard at it, then he should have said “everything if possible for the person who works hard at it”. Instead, what he said was that he wants to be “magic” and he can make 2+2=whatever he wants it to. I’m not really sure what it is about the Hollywood, more money than you know what to do with crowd. Why are they so particularly susceptible to this belief? Is it because they are targeted? Or is there more to it?
When you have so much at the base of the pyramid, is traveling up Laslow’s need hierarchy more difficult or confusing? Some of these folks don’t strike me as the brightest bulbs. But others are certainly not dumb. I understand why, even with all they have, they still ask the same basic questions that we all do. But I wonder if they have anyone to bounce these ideas off of or if they exist in some sort of egoistic personality vacuum?
Or does it just come down to the fact that it’s just one more thing they can buy that normal folks can’t? I mean anyone can be saved by Jesus. hell poor people can do that. But it takes money and influence (and money) to succeed in this religion.
There’s definitely something unnerving about it all. It’s sad in a way that your garden variety religions aren’t. Possibly because the big religions are throngs of unwashed masses, whereas Scientologists seem to be isolated PR machines of convoluted emptiness.
Or something.
