TGA Podcast: Episode 72

Hey gang, welcome back to another episode of The Good Atheist podcast! I’ve been receiving so many emails about 2012 that I thought it would be a good idea to make a whole show about it, and what better time to do so than right after the release of the new disaster movie sharing the same name! So this week we’ll be talking about Ronald Emmerich’s movie, 2012 and our thoughts about all this silly doomsday bullshit. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, we recommend you do before the show if you want to avoid some spoilers. This is an extra long episode, clocking in at an hour, so enjoy!

Y2K was totally over blown. All that was needed was a change in the number of digits as to prevent something like miscalculating my age, it wouldn’t cause even the program to fail if it won’t let you enter more that 2 digits, and standard practice it to though a message that says wrong data then ask for it again if you can’t restrict the input to what it will accept. And most of the industries that were already dealing with things like loans that extended up to or past the year 2000 had already have a cheap fix, a quick replace with an updated version or just a simple update, that let the programs continue to act as it was intended instead of doing something like calculating your age as 110 or -10 years old. And for everything that was stored in the MM/DD/YY format had gone through a program that added a 19 or 20, just the 19 if you or the company had enough foresight, In front of it to put it in the MM/DD/YYYY format.

Y’know, sometimes I hear you guys make mistakes on your podcast and I just cringe, but on this episode you really screwed up. We are in a period of solar calm… no sunspots for a long period.

Can’t you do one little bit of internet research before you blab about stuff you know nothing about? That’s all we free-thinkers need is for one of our mouthpieces to give the right wingers more ammunition. I can hear them now… “He doesn’t know anything about solar cycles, therefore nothing he says is correct.”

Oh, and Donnie, you must’ve forgotten what life was like in the 1990s and you obviously know nothing about mainframe computer operating systems. You don’t just apply a patch to 30- to 40-year-old technology. That would have been like stretching your jaw to fit two more teeth in it. By the way, there were many people over 100 years old in the late 1990s who were getting their ages screwed up by computers.

Just so you know, NASA is now trying to do something. My mom got put in charge of the new “planetary defense” system. I’m not sure what they do, but I think it involved adapting anti missile technology to be used against meteors and comets which look like they might hit the earth.
