Hitchens on the “Q”

Hitchens was in Toronto this summer, and he stopped by to give a cool radio interview on the Q, a CBC Radio program that features the arts, culture, and entertainment. Personally, I’m not really a fan of the show, but anytime Hitchens gives an interview, it’s always worth listening to.

Out of the “big names” in atheism (Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, etc), Hitchens is one of my favourites to listen to speak (although Harris’ speech that was posted on TGA a while ago was also really good).

I’m not much of a fan of Q either, the last time i listened was when Billy Bob Thorton lost his shit on it (although that was very entertaining).

It’s really refreshing to hear a calm rational conversation with Hitchens.

Hello, I want to ask a question. I was asked if atheists believe in evolution, suffixed with an “i’m just curious” or something. I say, “the case for evolution gives credence to the case for logic and evidence,” and hoping to dodge his attack, adding, “me, i’m a feminist.”

I thought that might throw him, but I got this, “There’s no evidence for evolution, so it’s just as fanatical as creationism,” and a bungled query on the “traditional sense” of feminism.

This really caught me off guard. My belief is that feminism is a more worthy cause than anti-theism, at this juncture. So I let it go. But there’s always a next time, you see, so how do I punch back at that? (in 140 or fewer characters, please :-)

I would argue that a culture’s relative moral merits can be measured by the role women play in that society

So, it’s best to let the other thing drop?
