A Double Standard

Does this cartoon offend you? Personally it’s poorly done, there’s no joke there, and in general it’s insultingly terrible. Still, it’s a fucking cartoon, and should be no big deal, right? Well, not so much.┬áRemember a few years back when a Danish Newspaper published cartoon depicting Mohammed, and the Muslim community basically had a fucking meltdown? Well, it seems as though there was another bit of news going on in the background at the time worth mentioning. The Arab European League published a cartoon during the affair with the intent of offending Jews by denying the Holocaust. Their goal was apparently to show that it’s not only Muslims that get upset over free speech issues, and sure enough it worked; the group is now being prosecuted under Holocaust denial laws.

I’ve always said Holocaust denial laws are both pointless and dangerous; while I am personally repulsed by the notion certain individuals choose to deny the atrocities committed by the Nazis, trying to use the long arm of the law to silence these people has exactly the opposite effect. It demonstrates Europe is incapable of living by the principle of free speech. The truth is when people are allowed to say what they want, occassionally they will say something horrible and offensive; it’s inevitable. How can we blame Muslims for overreacting to simple cartoons when we are prepared to jail people for making a few shitty scribblings?

I remember when comics were supposed to be funny.

Sure they are being prosecuted under anti-holocaust denial laws but last I checked the Jewish community didn’t start lighting things on fire or cause mayhem in the streets.

This might be a stupid question but what is the joke supposed to be?

I am all for anti-holocaust denial laws. Since denying that it happened is so ridiculously false, doing so is tantamount to hate speech. Drawing the image of mohammed may be a sin in islam, but the people protesting against the right to publish such a drawing are just oversensitive idiots. I feel the same way about christians who object to non-christians taking jesus’ name in vain.

Free speech is a noble sentiment and all, but it’s too able to be hijacked for inflammatory and hatemongering causes. I think there should be the ability to shut people up who tout blatant and offensive lies to incite other morons to spread hate. That is criminal. Blaspheming isn’t.

Hey, look at fox news… I get the feeling that under British libel laws, they would have been sued into the ground years ago.

oh, and this cartoon is fine, it doesn’t seem to deny anything. quite the opposite in fact.

it’s not very funny and it mutilates the spelling of Auschwitz, but it’s not a hatemongering falsity.

Here’s the joke as I understand it:

Two guys with big noses (Jews) are poking around at the bodies lying on the ground at “Auswitch” (Auschwitz) and one guy says “I don’t think they are Jews.” (Not all the deaths at Auschwitz were Jewish deaths.) The other guy says “We have to get to the 6,000,000 somehow.” The joke is that 6,000,000 Jewish bodies were never found, and no records of 6 million Jewish deaths were ever found, and no ashes of 6 million Jews were ever found, so the Jews are counting some non-Jews in order to come up with 6 million Jewish deaths in the Holocaust.

The fact that David Irving had to serve time in an Austrian prison is as disgusting to me as David Irving himself is.
Incitement to violence should not be protected speech, sure, but as far as I’m aware, that’s not what most of the holocaust denial gang are doing.

These people should be, and are, to a large extent shunned in society for having blinders on and denying the obvious for ideological reasons, but suggesting it’s a good idea to jail people for thought crimes is fucking ridiculous.

And I hope the people who made the comic strip at the top didn’t quit their day jobs, because I don’t think they’ll be making a living from humour any time soon.
