Hitchens talks about North Korea not being an atheist state

Check out minute 5:10 when Hitchens starts talking about how North Korea is anything but an atheist state. Religious people are often confused by this: they believe that if no official religion is endorsed by the state that it necessarily means that the country is itself atheistic. What they fail to realize is that it is the State that is itself a religion. Kim Jong Il has claimed that his birth was foretold by a swallow, and heralded by the appearance of a double rainbow over the mountain and a new star in the heavens. The fact that his dead father is still the leader of a country tells you that something extremely fishy is going on here.
Personality cults are nothing new. Hitler felt similarly that the state itself should be a type of religion, with him as it’s perfect leader. As my more educated and rational readers may already know, atheism is merely the rejection of God or any other supernatural force, and not any specific endorsement of morality. Most of the atheist I know are humanists, a belief I can safely say Kim-Jong-il has no real interest in. Still, religious people will keep throwing him in our face as a typical example of what “atheist states” are capable of. Luckily, smart people like Christopher will be there to clarify everything.

If ever I saw a video where Hitchens is pissed, this is the one. Haha! He still makes perfect sense though. Now that is a talent.

@Mario,
Fact of life: Hitchens is usually at his most brilliant when he’s trashed. I’d love to down a few with him and talk shop.
