The Chaser’s war on everything tackles Biblical literalism

The truth is, almost no one believes the Bible is literally true. They just say they do because that’s what they’ve been instructed to say. Most of these people have either never read the Bible, or they have conveniently ignored passages which so clearly call upon human beings to kill homosexuals, disobedient children, witches, fortune tellers, and people who don’t believe in the same God they do. Wow, what a great moral guide you have there!

I’m Hunter a 16 year old Baptist from Florida, and I too believe the bible is literally true. I hate to say this but the individuals interviewed were ignorant of biblical text. The old testament is the old covenant with God’s chosen people, the Jews. As a Jew to get into heaven you must follow the instuctions stated, and you must realize the world is becoming increasingly evil back in the time of the old testament it was outragous to curse your father, so it wasnt a regular practice of stoning your children. Christians are part of a new covenant through Jesus Christ, we can rid ourselves of sin by asking for forgiveness. The new testament teaches us not to pass judgement and ultimatly sins such as homosexuality, and adultry are to be judge by Lord.

oh dear, how anybody can bend their minds around bible literacy is totally beyond me. It must take a monumental leap of delusion. What with all the stoning of adulterers, bashing of babies heads off rocks – how would you find time to fall to your knees and grovel like sheep?

If homosexuality is to be judged by the lord, why do Christians spend so much time battling against it?
Hunter, you only follow the New Testament? Am I understanding that right?

    Hunter

I, as well as my other christian friends, do not attack homosexuals while it is clear many Christians do. I just share my beliefs with them, because as a gentile saved by Christ it is my obligation not to God, but to my fellow man. It would be wrong for me not to share what I believe to be eternal salvation. “If you had a cure for cancer how much would you have to hate the world not to share it?”

And while Christians do believe we have a new covenant with God through Christ death and resurection, the old testament still contains commandments for us to follow, but through this new covenant if we fall into sin we have the grace to ask for forgiveness in Christ name rather than animal sacrifice to cover our sins, or have to face stoning.

ookkkkaaaayyyy. so in christianity you can do whatever you want as long as you ask forgiveness? the only sin they say is the unforgivable one is the denial or doubt of god and the other superstitious beings. now, if thats true just for the sake of argument, if someone like Hitler or Saddam Husein (hitler was catholic ftw) asked for forgiveness before they died, they are in heaven right now. now that doesnt sound very fair now does it?

    Hunter

If they were sincere and confessed the Lord as the one true God then yes. It sounds unjust, but if you have commited one sin you have commited them all. So adulturer is just as bad in the eyes of God as a murder and if they have the grace of forgiveness so should everyone.

If the Supreme Being, Creator of the Universe really views an extramarital one-night stand as being “just as bad” as serial murder, then I suggest that said Being suffers from a complete lack of any sense of proportion. Furthermore, I would not trust a Being with such an obvious moral defect to make good on any promises concerning an afterlife….

The old testament is the old law and that the old law does not apply to non-Jews. Never has, never will. By running around trying to get people to follow the old law they (the hosts of the show) just misrepresent both the Bible and christianity.

I’ve no love for religion, but if you’re going to try to sway people away from it you need to do something apart from lying to make them feel stupid.

You’re cure for cancer is rat piss, you can keep it.
How do you know that your sky daddy wasn’t lying in the bible?
Maybe it was a test to distinguish between the weak minded fellow who believe everything their told from the people of true strength who believe in the value of life. You people just don’t realise how baseless and shaky your opinions are.

Very interesting discussion here, I would like to join in with my view on things. I believe that people should be allowed to believe in whatever they wish, without judgement but it does normally reflect in their day to day behavour.

    Quoting Carla’s post from earlier:

Especially this bit: misrepresent both the Bible and Christianity.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah%27s_Witnesses

Christianity has a novel way of misrepresenting itself, no wonder people believe in something like the bible, they just don’t have a clue, just like me they are just trying to figure it all out!

And this bit:I’ve no love for religion, but if you’re going to try to sway people away from it you need to do something apart from lying to make them feel stupid.

I’m with you on this BUT this is comedy not an enlightenment exercise, wow I actually get it! Hallelujah!

Hunter Says: Thank you Carla for understandin and your intellegent reply. I wish other commentators, both believers and non-believers alike, would keep some sort of dignity while replying.

That’s good to think that way, ignorance is bliss, people have the right to say whatever, however, by the way, without persecution.

Oh Hunter you misspelled: understandin and intellegent in the above text :P

This is all off-topic, since the post was about literalists, but if you want to play, okay.

“Of course, the Old Testament doesn’t matter, because the genocide, infanticide, warmongering, slavery, rape and the requirements that we brutally murder our own family members for trivial infractions of religious dogma make us uncomfortable. All of that really makes it hard for us to argue that the bible is the source of morality.”

Sorry, but you people in the comments don’t get off that easily.

Do you mean to say that the Ten Commandments are invalid, because they are of the Old Testament? Do you realize that 75% of the bible *is* the Old Testament? Do you realize that the New Testament doesn’t lay down very many religious laws at all, but is more a story about the Middle Eastern region during the time of Christ?

Most Christian religious laws are from the Old Testament, which the commenters here seem to want to dismiss as irrelevant.

The first commenter accuses the people in the video of being ignorant of the bible, yet is himself ignorant of the Book of Matthew. In the Book of Matthew, Jesus himself commands all Christians to follow the laws of Moses: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

You don’t get to say that Christians only follow the laws of the New Testament and still quote from the Old Testament when it becomes convenient to justify unethical or bigoted behavior.

It is a hypocritical cop out for an inconsistency that cannot be explained, so you want to wave your hand and say “oh, that doesn’t count. That’s the OLD laws, not the new happy, happy fun laws!”

at the end of the day, old testament and new testament, both reek of bullshit
The old testament contains claims that we know today are dubious (tower of babel responsible for all languages. gimme a break)
that must have worked for the bronze age folk but in the age of science in which we currently exist, those claims hold absolutely no water. one might as well get his knowledge of the universe from harry potter
As for the new testament, it contains four different stories about some Jewish dude who claimed he was god and did many magical things and said many magical things. he died rose again , but where is he now, he doesnt seem to be doing much now.he might as well be dead because he contributes nothing to society

Science on the other hand is responsible for all the things we enjoy right now.
Science has done more miracles than jesus ever did

So, why argue about the ramblings of bronze age middle easterners. Those guys were wrong and to think that the people of 5000 years ago had the answers is to be intellectually dishonest and for lack of a better word, a moron

“ut the above video using only the OT. Besides, I could pick and choose a bunch of crap from the NT that would be just as non-sensical, such as the one about Jesus’ followers hating their families, or Paul talking about marriage as FAR LESS obedient than being a celibate, unmarried follower. The NT is EXACTLY the same as Joseph Smith’s delusional Mormon writings. Jesus was a cult leader, just like every other cult leader. Unfortunately, the cult outlived him.

The video crew from the above video wasn’t only using the OT, they talked about the book of Matthew as well.
