10 Reasons why Superman is better than Jesus

Blog

This article
made me want to include a little list of why Superman is better than Jesus. I’ve made a comparative list so that I can definitively prove that the last son of Krypton is superior to the King of Kings in almost every way.

  1. Superman has saved the planet for destruction numerous times. Jesus has threatened to return and bring upon the end of the earth with him, but so far is a fucking “no-show”.
  2. Jesus performed a few miracles, but Superman can shoot laser beams out of his eyes, he can fly, is indestructible, and can see through everything except lead. In one movie he turned back time. How awesome is that?
  3. Jesus may have died for your sins, but Superman died to protect us from an intergalactic killing machine called Doomsday.
  4. When Jesus died, he was resurrected 3 days later and then abruptly left, telling his disciples he’d be back within their lifetimes (an obvious lie). Superman died, was in stasis for a while, and emerged with long glorious 90’s hair. Unlike Jesus, however, Superman stuck around and has been busy keeping the world safe from evil.
  5. Although not a God, Superman still risks his life all the time trying to combat super villains. Jesus, on the other hand, is apparently all powerful, and yet refuses to do something as basic as healing amputees.
  6. Superman can move mountains. Jesus claims praying to him will accomplish the same feat, but no noticeable effects from prayer have ever been measured.
  7. Superman is an expert in dozens of languages, and is an accomplished journalist. Jesus never left any writings, or evidence of any of his works.
  8. Superman hooked up with the insanely hot Lois Lane, while the only women that showed any interest in Jesus were all prostitutes.
  9. Jesus said “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me” (Luke 19:27). Superman, on the other hand, has a strict code of conduct that forbids him to kill anyone.
  10. If you fell out of your apartment window and cried for help, Superman would try and save you. Not only will Jesus not even bother to save you; he will send you to hell for all eternity if you don’t believe in him.

Now some people may criticize me for this article, and they might be right: what’s the point in debating which fictional character is better, anyways?

Love it! Great dissertation of two fictional characters!

    Awesome.

I’m translating it to spanish right away.

    Keep it up.

    Hehehe, very good!

  5. Jessica Says:

Who wants to walk on water when you can fly over it? Superman is so much cooler.

  6. Jen Says:

Out loud exclamation upon reaching the end “Fuck. Yes. This is WIN.”

    AHAHAHAHAHAHA. I love it.

  7. Heidi Says:

There’s more evidence that Superman exists. I’ve seen his roller coasters.

  8. Marcus McElhaney Says:

    Here is my coutnerlist: http://mmcelhaney.blogspot.com/2009/06/10-reasons-why-there-is-comparision.html

Jesus beats Superman hands down. There is way more historical proof for Jesus than for anyone else in the 1st Century and better evidence than for Superman

  9. Keith Watson Says:

Marcus, that’s hilarious, but inaccurate. We’ve SEEN pictures of Superman doing these things. The only thing we have about Jesus doing any of that stuff is all retconny fanfic.

  10. Dizzy Says:

Not to mention Jesus can’t SHOOT LASERS OUT OF HIS FUCKING EYEBALLS.

  11. McMunkee Says:

It’s true, Superman is better, cooler, faster, stronger, more intelligent, more virtuous, and all that. But Batman did kick his ass when he went crazy. After that though, Superman went back to his normal routine. Kind of like Jesus at the temple when he saw people peddling goats and shit. But, to my personal surprise, no one tried to stop a child from ranting in a holy place, destroying people’s property, and disrupting a ground considered holy. That just seems strange to me…

  12. Marcus McElhaney Says:

I can’t believe the comments on this. No one has offered a single worthwhile rebuttal. Sad.

I respect your beliefs (I’m assuming you are an atheist ), but only superman is fictional just like santa claus and the tooth fairy. Jesus exists in the annals of history.

  14. Moses Says:

The bible ain’t history, homeslice. Well, its old I suppose, but it isn’t an historical account any more than the works of Homer. This was all in fun, but if you’re intent on mounting a defense for your beliefs, you should at least do your homework first. There are no (none, zero, zip) independent historical mentions of Jesus Christ from any historian working at the time of his supposed life and death. If you’re thinking of Josephus, the paragraph denoting the life of Jesus was most likely added in the 4th Century. No one else says anything about a “Jesus”. “Christ” is sort of mentioned, but that is only greek for savior or messiah. Its a reach at best. But hey, if you wanna go grasping as straws, be my guest.

    I always liked Superman…

  15. The Perfessor Says:

Jesus exists in the annals of history.

    El wrongo!

No, he doesn’t. No mention of him anywhere outside the bible.

It’s this kind of ignorance that makes me lose respect for Christianity.

  16. Harrison Says:

Amazing job here! Cool site in general (my first visit). Big Superman fan, and not so much so of Jesus, so biased though I am, I’ll still go ahead and rule soundly on the side of the last son of Krypton in this battle.

I’d like to point out to Marcus that while he commented on how nobody had offered a single worthwhile rebuttal, he also failed to do so himself, either here or on his counterlist.

Incidentally, I’ve got that Superman lithograph at the top of the page! Very nice addition.

  17. Fred Says:

    Marcus you’re such a moron… I can’t believe people like you sometimes.

  18. chocobar Says:

    Marcus,
Thank you so much for your post. After being an atheist for the last ten years, your rebuttal to Jacobs post has shown me the light. No longer will I blindly trust in science and reason, but I will be follow the truth in a 2000 year old and what is told to me by a self appointed representative of God and his biased interpretations of said book.
Again, thank you Marcus for guiding this poor lost soul. You truly are doing Gods work.

  19. Liz Says:

So I know this was “all in fun”, but I noticed the comments referring to Jesus as a “fictional” character, and then the ones defending them by saying there is no historical account of Jesus outside of the Bible, and I thought the other side to that deserved a voice as well. Actually, there is evidence for the existence of Jesus Christ, both in secular and biblical history.

To name a few (besides Flavius Josephus), there is Julius Africanus, who quotes the historian Thallus in a dialogue of the events that followed the crucifixion of Christ; Pliny the Younger, in Letters 10:96, who wrote of early Christian worship including the fact that Christians claimed Jesus as God and conducted themselves ethically, as well as referencing the love feast and the Lord’s Supper (which Jesus administered); The Babylonian Talmud, which confirms Jesus’ crucifixion on the eve of Passover and accuses Christ of carrying out sorcery and encouraging Jewish apostasy; Lucian of Samosata, who was a second-century Greek writer records that Jesus was worshiped by Christians, introduced new teachings, and was crucified for them. He also writes about Jesus’ teachings, as well as recording that Christians “lived according to Jesus’ laws, believed themselves to be immortal, and were characterized by contempt for death, voluntary self-devotion, and renunciation of material goods”; Mara Bar-Serapion, who writes of Jesus’ wisdom and faith values, that he was considered the king of Israel, was murdered by the Jews, and lived on in the knowledge and teachings of his followers. Gnostic writings, which include The Gospel of Truth, The Apocryphon of John, The Gospel of Thomas, The Treatise on Resurrection, etc., all mention Jesus as well.

I know Christians are pegged as ignorant, un-intellectual people who blindly accept and believe things that science and reason invalidate, but that is not true. There is more hard evidence for Christianity than any religion in the world, and for me, too much evidence (both historical and spiritual) to pass up the chance to seek Christ and see for myself.

  20. John Haugeland Says:

It’s worth noting that Superman has killed, both voluntarily and involuntarily, dozens of times.

  21. CybrgnX Says:

    Hi Liz:
Good try but everything you list is a list of ‘my brother had a friend who knew a guy who says he met ….’ type of evidence which isn’t and most are not a part of the ‘accepted’ BuyBull so don’t count anyway.
And I always thought better of Superman then gOd or his bastard.

  22. Lifer Says:

Jesus rules Earth-50 in the DC Multiverse.

This made me giggle: “There is more hard evidence for Christianity than any religion in the world,”

Another argument posited by theists is that we have no proof that people such as Plato or Socrates existed because all we have is the same sort of second-hand accounting that Liz is offering as “hard evidence for Christianity”. The only problem with that line of reasoning is that the great Philosophers were indeed great thinkers that produced profound questions and reasoning.. not supposedly walking on water, raising themselves or others from the dead, or being born of virgins.

  23. Jimmy Boy Says:

“I’m sure Jesus is coming back.” In the year 2000 right? Oh, wait.

  24. Liz Says:

So, why would there be so many different and diverse accounts of Jesus’ existence, even by those who did not believe He was who He said He was? Keep in mind also that in A.D. 70, the Romans invaded and destroyed Jerusalem and most of Israel, slaughtering its inhabitants. Entire cities were literally burned to the ground. A lot of evidence and eyewitnesses of Jesus would have been destroyed, and yet, there are still many accounts of his existence (more even than the ones I named.)

I guess something else that I wonder about atheism, and this has nothing to do with the “evidence” debate–we could go back and forth until we’re blue in the face and never accept each others’ side. But I just think a lot about this kind of thing and wanted to hear an atheist’s perspective. You know that emptiness and loneliness…that feeling you have sometimes at the end of the day when you are done occupying yourself with life and with other people, and you’re just left with yourself? Even if you’re married, even if you have a lot of friends, or a fulfilling job. If you can honestly say you’ve never experienced the feeling of a certain void or loneliness that even those around you can’t quite seem to fill the right way, then by all means, don’t give this question any thought…it doesn’t apply to you, and you do just find without a God. But I know it’s been a very strong and real thing in my life, and I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t relate. So what do you make of that kind of longing? If the earth just suddenly happened, and wasn’t created, or we have slowly evolved through time, why would there be a longing inside of us that somehow no earthly thing could satisfy? If we’re nothing but mammals that appear on and return to the earth as part of the circle of life, wouldn’t our purpose simply be biological? Why would there be a need within us at all beyond what what have here and now? If you think that the loneliness we all experience is simply for other humans, why does it never seem to meet our need? I guess I can’t reconcile things like that.

Honestly, I am asking out of curiosity because I have never heard an atheist’s take. I don’t want to go back and forth taking cheap shots at people, and I really feel like when people do that on the internet, it’s because they’re hiding behind their computer so they feel like they can be a jerk, but wouldn’t likely be that way in person. So if you don’t like what I asked, I’m sorry, but you don’t have to answer. If you want to speak to it, I’d like to hear your opinion.

  25. Liz Says:

Also, Lifer, that is a valid question: how can we prove many people’s existence in history if we say the accounts of their life and things they did throughout their life is only hearsay? And if you think that Jesus was not a philosopher, give the Bible a read. There is a wealth of philosophy in His life and teaching. And study some Christian theology. If you won’t give the Bible a legitimate chance, then it’s really not worth arguing with you.

  26. Mike O Says:

Fuck the bible and fuck you Liz.

  27. Lifer Says:

    Liz,

It’s good to see you asking questions.

Why do we have many people writing about many topics, not necessarily Jesus, who were not eye-witnesses and why do these stories vary wildly when examining the facts that we have available to us? Why are many of the stories of Jesus’ life and other biblical tales held in controversy today even by the many sects of his own followers? Why are many of the stories of Jesus’ life direct copies of tales of other demigods including his feats of revivification, born of a virgin, etc.?

Through the ages since they were first penned there have been many translation errors, misinterpretations, and revisions carried out by men that were obviously not present. That is plain. Short answer to your question would be human fallibility, attempts at claiming power, attempts at gathering followers, tradition, etc. You and I can both agree, even if it hasn’t been the experience in your life so far, that religion and word of mouth information can be twisted towards or used as justification for evil deeds.

“I guess something else that I wonder about atheism, and this has nothing to do with the “evidence” debate–we could go back and forth until we’re blue in the face and never accept each others’ side.”

I have a problem with this statement. Can you guess what it is? The burden of proof is on the believer. Make me believe through my skepticism and questioning and I’ll willingly pledge myself to Yahweh, Zeus, Thor, or whatever god is willing to be the first to show themselves.

The question you ask regarding a feeling of emptiness at the end of the day.. “why would there be a longing inside of us that somehow no earthly thing could satisfy?”

This seems like more of a psychology/sociology question more than a question of theology and I’m hard-pressed to answer it simply because there are so many possible answers for so many people and for me, none of them results in belief in a Sky God that is all-powerful. Some people might fill that hole with food, some with travel, some with science, some with a sadomasochistic totalitarian entity that wants us to both love and fear it infinitely. It’s really an open-ended question that has no answer due to it’s subjective nature.

I’ll assume, forgive me, that you believe the reason behind this feeling in your case is that you’re yearning for a closeness with your particular god, that you are comforted that there is something greater than you that can never be removed. If I’m wrong, please correct me. You didn’t really elaborate on what this absence actually meant to you except that others around you that you’ve asked, assuming they are other members of the faithful (I don’t see you asking strangers this question), would agree that this is your god exerting some sort of external or possibly even internal influence. You could easily substitute ‘emptiness’ with any other emotion as the evidence of god if this is in fact some ‘proof’ to you that your god exists.

“I feel happy today, therefore God”

    while another might claim

“I feel like killing today, therefore God”

Assuredly an extreme example but I find it incredibly apt given the personal nature of monotheistic gods. If you were indoctrinated in another faith you might feel the same way about any number of gods. For example, the Catholic pantheon of 5,120 particular saints, answers for who to pray to for practically everything you can think of. If that isn’t a comforting notion I don’t know what is!

I think the story of Jesus is great. I actually know all the words to Jesus Christ Superstar and I sing it in the shower all the time. I feel fortunate that the stories of the Bible were presented to me by my parents as stories and just that. They were right next to the other books of fairy tales and lore which I eventually outgrew. I feel I owe them the world for that.

I’ve had the good fortune to exist in a time and place in human history where I have not wanted for much and my life has never truly been in much danger. Whenever I feel the ‘emptiness’ or ‘loneliness’ at the end of the day I think about how lucky I am in this regard. Whenever I feel slighted or an injustice has been brought against me I think of the less fortunate of the world who will never have it as easy as I have been afforded. This in turn makes me humbled, sort of a wistful happiness, by viewing my life objectively.

  28. Daniel Says:

I do have to say, this is a very interesting topic. I for one have to agree with Liz (good fight) and Lifer. But understand what is the truth and what is made by man. As Lifer had stated about human nature “Short answer to your question would be human fallibility, attempts at claiming power, attempts at gathering followers, tradition, etc. You and I can both agree, even if it hasn’t been the experience in your life so far, that religion and word of mouth information can be twisted towards or used as justification for evil deeds.” – this in part is one of the biggest problems when it comes to Humaninty. But for those who see Christianity as a religion, you are incorrect. Christianity is not a religion, it is faith, a belief and a way of life. Unfortunately, it has been tainted and twisted for mans own desires; War in the name of Christ, Killings in the name of GOD, Jugdement by man in the name of GOD, etc. Most people will critize Christians because, well honestly, “it is written”. “Followers of Christ” is the true definition of the word “Christian”. We model our lifes around HIS and try to set the example. Our duty is not to “convert” or “recuit”, we are to “lead” and “show”. Not one of us (humanity in all) are perfect and that is notour purpose, nor should it be the way we represent HIM. No “sin” is greater than another, no man is unclean, only through the “BLOOD of Christ” (Christ – messiah) can we be cleansed.

It is sad that we don’t have a lot of the physical proof, but just like a person who will not stop pursuing a dream; you may not be able to hold it, you may not be able to show it, you may not be able to explain its value to another without being reticled for it, but it is a belief, the force that gives you the strength to continue, the strenght to move forward no matter what. I personally can account for the change Jesus Christ has made in my life and can only express that to those I encounter. But think about this for a second; you are born to die, all are, if there is not GOD, then life is meaningless. but we are the only creatures on this planet that are able to do what we do. Others we have to teach. If evolution is the process, then why have we been the only ones to evolve to this state. And since we all die a evolutionary way, what would be the point of this discussion, would it not be easier for us to act like the animals we train to be like us?

Jesus may not be your friend, but HE loves you, that is the reason for HIS coming and sacrificing HIMSELF on our behalf, because of the first “sin” that brought us down this path of destruction. HE is the only one that has laid down HIS life for all. And yes, HE will come again, but it will be to rid the earth of the “sin” and those who have not excepted HIS gift. Look at it this way, I planted flowers in my garden, they were beautiful, a few became infected, so I took the good ones out and got rid of the infected ones, but the soil was tainted, so, I removed all the soil and put down fresh and untainted soul, then replanted the non-infect flowers. I know this is may seem really simple, but we are far better than flowers because of (2) things: 1. We were made in HIS image. 2. We have the freedom of choice.

You all can choice the path your life will go and in the end, that is between you and GOD, I am just a messanger like my sister (sister in Christ) Liz. Say all that you want to say, bad mouth us, be judgemental, what ever, she and I will still love you, pray for you and be there if you want to know more about the GOD we serve, for HE set the example, we will do our best to follow.

It will always be your choice. GOD Bless you all, for in GOD, Christ our LORD, I trust. A servant till death and beyond.

PS. Just a note. I was actually searching google for “Better than je” and before I could finish this came up as an option. My first thought was “What ever”, but there was a pull to look at it, I then came across the site. My first thoughts were anger, but I am human and so are all of you. These comments are here for a reason, no matter what you think. HE excepts us all no matter what our life is like.

  29. Daniel Says:

    ***Note***

HE changes us from within, so that our outside appearance and ways can mirror HIS teachings, no human should try to change you; I will not try to change you. This is just a stop on the path called life. Your life, your soul, your choice….

Please forgive me for my spelling, I know I have done a great injustice there.

  30. Daniel Says:

If you would, for those who would chose Superman, look at the simularities –

    Both:

    sent by their father

    alien to this world

in human form though strength beyond ours

    soilders for the cause

would and have died willingly for the people of earth, the people each loved even if people did not love them in return.

have (Superman) and will (JESUS) come again.

    looked at as Heros.

I honestly have to say this is a great topic.

  31. Lifer Says:

Daniel – strange place to proselytize.

I was with you til you went off the rails here, “But think about this for a second; you are born to die, all are, if there is not GOD, then life is meaningless.”

You go further than this, “But understand what is the truth and what is made by man.” Presumably, Jesus is the ‘truth’(and the way!) and I have to assume reason or logic or whatever else you consider the opposite of faith is ‘made by man’. Strangely enough, something you probably won’t ever accept, is that your religion is most definitely created and refined by men. The refinement continues to this day in the form of revision that you are expounding here. Similarly, your distinction to me between ‘convert & recruit’ and ‘lead & show’ reminds me of the recent change in military tactics from ’search & destroy’ to ’sweep & clear’. These are merely semantics. I have to say though, I’m glad we’ve moved past openly annihilating other tribes by raping, pillaging and claiming their lands in the name of Yahweh, your God. I’ll remind you that ultimately in your religion (I refuse to engage in the semantics you employ with this terminology), Jesus is God and vice versa so trying to take the good without the bad in your favor is not a tactic that I’ll accept lightly.

Regardless of the moral messages given by Jesus (he, in some ways, went against the Old Testament he was brought up with) he is still supposedly a zombie with magic powers that is also somehow his own father who finally flew up to heaven in bodily form. I do think that it was funny that you were searching up the phrase ‘better than jesus’ though.

  32. johno Says:

    @Marcus McElhaney:

‘There is way more historical proof for Jesus than for anyone else in the 1st Century…’

Did you learn your history from a cereal packet? Goodness! I’d be happy to list numerous first-century characters whose historicity is better documented.

  33. Nelly Says:

First off superman is NOT REAL JESUS died for us. so he can save us
because in the Law of Moses no one where saved because no one did the law because Israel became rebellious and turn to false gods!!!
BUT i will respect way of thinking but i think i am right that JESUS IS WAY BETTER THEN SUPERMAN.BECAUSE SUPERMAN DOESNT EXCITES

  34. Tre Says:

I was googling “Is superman great or not?” for my 6 year old daughter (just to because she was on a mission!)and came across this article….and I absolutely love it! Had me splitting my sides! :-)

  35. Zed Wagner Says:

Atheists should read Matthew Henry’s Commentary.

Re: Luke 19:27 and Point 9.

    1. Jesus is Speaking in the form of a parable {cf. luke. 19:11},
    2. And he is not issuing a Fatwa to have people killed before him, right there on the spot.

Instead, he is refering to the Jews, who rejected the rightful King, and the future consequence. He will reject those who rejected them, and will sentance them to Eternal neverending torment in a very real hell. As opposed to the reward of eternal life in the presence of the Creator of Reality and Existance. (Kingdom of Heaven)

Mathew Henry’s Commentary on this verse:

‘In the sentence passed upon them at his return: Those mine enemies bring hither, v. 27.

When his faithful subjects are preferred and rewarded, then he will take vengeance on his enemies, and particularly on the Jewish nation, the doom of which is here read. When Christ had set up his gospel kingdom, and thereby put reputation upon the gospel ministry, then he comes to reckon with the Jews……The wrath of Christ came upon them to the uttermost , and their destruction redounded very much to the honour of Christ and the peace of the church.’

Clearly the “wicked” king who will take vengeance on the Jews is Christ himself, according to Matthew Henry’s Commentary (not a work written by atheists, of course)

Bottom Line, Jesus will permanently send people to hell (for rejecting his torture, death, and resurection on their behalf; done for the forgiveness of their sin)

Superman can’t issue eternal and binding judgements. Furthermore, if he were, in fact, real; He would be hellbound for his sins unless he Knelt before Lord Jesus, in surrender.

  36. joe botelho Says:

Forget debating with true belivers over evidence about the Jesus charecter being a real person, the real question is which universe would he be from? MARVEL or DC comics? Because i say DC because Marvel heros are much more realistic and Jesus is so plainly a work of Fantasy.

  37. Jay McMahon Says:

Jesus is real – the Bible tells me so.

The Bible says nothing of Superman, so he isn’t real.

Also, don’t go listening to that Joe Botelho – he just a Caretaker and what would a Caretaker know anyway?

Well, I got to go – GOD is calling, so I’ve got my trusted unicorn named Lucky waiting to take me to the Great Fairy Races, which is being judged by the Giant Spaghetti Monster.

Just remember – all religions consist of (3) pivotal issues: Control, Obedience and Conformity – they just vary in intensity.

  38. Miranda Says:

Just a small thing about when people “see god” and “witness miracles”, its the same as the ink blot pictures, where your mind forms the picture into what it wants to see.

I love this list, I couldn’t stop laughing

  39. maryzaint Says:

this is just too awesome! what a giggle i got outta this! :D

  40. stacy Says:

Do you really think when you die, that is the end of your story? Do you really think heaven is not real? Do you know that Jesus can give you everlasting life which superman can’t? However, I still hope all of you enter heaven. =)

  41. Derek Says:

Jesus doesn’t threatened to come back… It is a PROMISE!…. Must read Matthew 24 and the book of Revelation.

  42. YoG Says:

To the best of my knowledge, only those that are insane talk to figures/people in their heads. “Faith” in any religion is something that people who cannot deal with their own finite existance cling to, and use a means of shedding any responsibility for their actions (it was ’s will). You get one chance at life, why have it ruled by some intangible entity created for crowd control in the dark ages?

  43. KJB Says:

I guess I don’t get atheists, I never beleived in Santa Claus cause I thought it was a ridiculous concept. Even as a child I could see the ignorance in believing that some guy travels the world in one day and breaks in your house to leave you gifts. I guess no one was pushing it on me, that and my dad had a 44 magnum and if anyone came in our house I knew they’d be shot. When I became old enough to properly discern between what is real and what is pretend I did not decide to devote my life to refuting the existance of Santa. I never once thought it would be a good idea to trounce on the beliefs of others no matter how rediculous they might be. If someone wants to believe in Santa Claus that’s your own business, just because you believe it doesn’t make it true, but I don’t feel like I have been appointed by whatever feelings I have in side to point it out to everyone. So what is it about athiests that give them such a deep seeded hate for a God they don’t beleive exists and for the people who believe in the concept of God? If your existence is the exactly the same as someone who beleives in God, (ie. you’re born, you live, you die and cease to exist) then what does it matter if someone believes in a God, it’s not harming your own existence? The other thing I’ve always wondered about athiests is why do they seem to only direct their ill feelings towards the Christian God? I guess I’ve never come across athiests that devote themselves to disproving Allah, Vishtu, Krishnah, Buddah, or any of the Native American gods. The other thing I noticed is that athiests talk about the falacy of faith but at the same time they have faith that what they beleive to be true is true, it just seems hypocritical to me. I think some athiests may be scared that there is a possiblity they might have to answer to a higher power for the life they lived and they don’t like that so they turn against it (kind of like how Anikin Skywalker turned against the ways of the Jedi.) I may be wrong here but from an outsiders perspective it seems like all athiests believe in God, if they didn’t then they would have nothing to hate so much.

  44. Lifer Says:

KJB, this is one of the most basic and ignorant rants I’ve read so far but I’ll humor you.

“Even as a child I could see the ignorance in believing that some guy travels the world in one day and breaks in your house to leave you gifts.”

Even as a child I could see the ignorance in believing that some guy was born of a virgin, was his own father, had magical powers, and resurrected himself from the dead.

“just because you believe it doesn’t make it true,”

    Right! Finally!

“what is it about athiests that give them such a deep seeded hate for a God they don’t beleive exists and for the people who believe in the concept of God?”

I highly doubt any atheist is going to say “I hate god!”. We don’t believe in gods, so how should we begin to hate any? We definitely are not impressed with the ‘operatives’ of gods on our planet because of the far reach they have politically, the untouchable sanctity of religious beliefs, the crimes committed, wars waged, the bigotry and genocide they generate and prolong in our species, etc. I could go on for days about just that alone.

We aren’t railing against YOUR god and it’s pure ego that you would interpret any atheist to even be saying that. If it’s because you always see the use of the singular ‘god’, even I have a problem with that. The plural is so much more all encompassing but somehow the atheist community decided ‘god’ would be easier. Many of the discussions and debates will center around the most prevalent gods of the day which are the 3 largest monotheisms which, despite claims to the contrary, are all worshipping the same magic. You aren’t going to find many people arguing lately for the special rights and positionings of Thor worshippers.

“they have faith that what they beleive to be true is true”

Philosophical debate that is just as much of an indictment of your own belief system. Atheists tend to be found adhering to a trust in science, reason and logic but OVERALL the major goal is understanding the universe we live in, refining and changing this with new information, promoting change and forward thinking. This is exactly the opposite of religious non-think which is the real major difference. Claiming atheism is a faith is simply preposterous.

“I think some athiests may be scared that there is a possiblity they might have to answer to a higher power for the life they lived and they don’t like that so they turn against it

Wow! Generalizations are so much fun. This is projection at its finest. You are really missing the mark to the point where I question your basic comprehension skills.

“I may be wrong here but from an outsiders perspective it seems like all athiests believe in God, if they didn’t then they would have nothing to hate so much.”

You are wrong here. Very, very, very wrong here.

  45. KJB Says:

“We aren’t railing against YOUR god and it’s pure ego that you would interpret any atheist to even be saying that.” I don’t recall discussing with you my particular beliefs in any god, it’s quite presumptuous of you to assume that the Christian god is MY god. I’m sorry, was it my excessive use of capitalization on the word god or Christian, oops, must have given me away, atheists are so predictable. You seem to have taken my observations and inserted them into some cookie cutter mindset that you are trying to fit me into. I also was not claiming that atheism was a faith in the sense that Christianity is a faith or Mormonism is a faith. Many atheists make the argument that having faith in something greater than themselves in someway makes a person weak-minded. It is a hypocritical point of view whether philosophical or otherwise, an atheist does have faith that atheism is true because the god concept is one that cannot be disproven just as you can’t disprove the existence of Superman or Santa Claus, (even Richard Dawkins will tell you that much) therefore it is required that you exercise faith to believe it. Plus if you didn’t have faith in atheism then you wouldn’t argue atheism to begin with. Atheists exercise faith every day, every time you sit down on a chair you have faith that the chair will hold you when you commit yourself to it, I’m just saying that faith isn’t as ignorant a concept as many atheists make it out to be. It’s very hypocritical to say that a Christian/Muslim/Buddhist is ignorant for having faith in something when atheists have just as much faith in atheism as others do in whatever ridiculous religion they believe in. I also find it redundant to say you don’t believe in something over and over and then dedicate so much of your time to trying to argue about what you don’t believe with anyone who will listen. So you don’t believe in the concept of a god who cares, I don’t believe in the concept of professional wrestling but you don’t see me authoring a blog about it. I’m just trying to figure out what makes atheists tick, I understand that you don’t believe in the concept of a god/gods but what made you decide to dedicate your life to telling everyone about it. Why is it so important to you that everyone else share your opinion about the matter? I think its pure ego for you to assume that you’re right and the umpteen billion people in the world that believe in whatever ridiculous religion they believe are wrong. How is it possible for you to have a problem with something that doesn’t even exist? To me it’s a schizophrenic line of thought, I mean if I was running around telling people that fairies don’t exist and even believing in them is ridiculous and those that believe in them are ignorant. And I made it quite clear that I can’t stand people who enjoy fairies and believe in them I want everyone to know that they’re fake and a sham it would make me seem like an insensitive bitter person. I don’t because what’s the point in trying to prove to you that what you believe is untrue? Fairies don’t exist and I don’t care to try to convince any one that they don’t exist, it’s just not that important to me. It’s the same thing with all those christians that get mad about Harry Potter, who cares about Harry Potter, if Christians don’t believe in magic to begin with then why are Christians always arguing about it. To me the argument creates validity for the other side. See the thing with atheists is not that they want to disprove something that doesn’t exist to begin with, to me they seem to be so ego driven that they just want to prove to everyone that they are right. I’m not trying to prove to you that what you believe is not right and I’m also not trying to prove to you that whatever it is that I believe is right. I’m just saying that trying to push your atheist beliefs on to others puts you in the same boat as the ones who believe in what you don’t. All you’re doing is trying to prove that you’re right and what others believe is wrong and to me that not quite forward thinking. Devote yourself to something more productive than proving to everyone that the thing you don’t believe exists doesn’t exist, it’s almost like you’re scared that if you don’t keep saying it over and over again you’ll stop believing it yourself. If you’re wondering I believe what I believe, I’m grounded enough in what I believe that I don’t find it necessary to tell you about it or to try and convince you that what I believe is right, I just find atheism to be intolerant and highly insensitive.

You are all missing the point…

    Christians…

Quit trying to quote scripture to those who don’t believe in it.

Quit trying to offer up half-hearted arguments without studying the reasons the other side has for thier views.

Quit trying to argue in generalities…you are only fueling the fire when you are misrepresenting the truth.

    Athiests…

Quit thinking that those who believe in God are the only ones with “faith”…you have beliefs based on life experiences as well

Quit thinking that belief in something other that your “faith” system is dilusional. Their are rational reasons for belief in God (try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxup3OS5ZhQ )

Quit assuming that those who believe in God have committed horrible atrocities BECAUSE of God…they have committed horrible atrocities because they are HUMAN, and use God as thier reasoning.

    Both sides….

You are reacting to the worst in each other and assuming that the loudest voices are the ones that represent the whole.

For myself, as a Christian (one who TRIES to follow the ways of Jesus) I must admit that I have done a number of sinful things. I don’t blame God for this, but that also doesn’t invalidate His exhistence. When we carry the banner of “Christian” we should treat it not as if we are righteous, but that we have seen how in error we are, and that we have realized there is a better way to live and we are committed to persuing that way.

It’s not a stretch to see why somebody would NOT believe in God. There are so many questions that don’t seem to have answers…some that may never have answers. Claiming the answers can be found in God seems all too easy and really childish. To claim you can answer them all is pompous and foolhardy. Historically, Christians have to take much blame on this because they so quickly point to God in lieu of scientific evidence when they could be pointing to God THROUGH scientific evidence (I would recommend http://biologos.org/ ). Instead of assuming it is God OR Science, try thinking of God THROUGH science…in other words…DON”T BE IGNORANT OF WHAT SCIENCE HAS SHOWN, JUST REALIZE THAT IT IS SHOWING US GOD.

Furthermore, you will never convince someone through empirical evidence alone. (a note to Christians only–don’t forget that Jesus performed many miracles and tons of people still didn’t believe including some apostles (Thomas/Judas). More convincing would be your life before and after God. Living a life claiming to be influened by God should have RADICAL evidences. Talk about how messed up you were and admit to your short comings. Discuss how you, no matter how hard you tried, could not overcome your porn issues, drug addictions, hatred, lying, etc. BE HONEST that you are still stuggling, but also be honest that something has changed and you can’t explain it other that to say that God has changed your heart. If he hasn’t, then I would argue that you are probably not saved and are living the religion of Christianity and not the Gospel. God DID NOT come to make religious followers. He came to restore a relationship with His creation. PLEASE stop pushing religion…Christianity is NOT A RELIGION! Too many Christians try to make it so and that’s why everybody sees your hypocrasy! The Gospel is not about what you DO. It is about what Christ DID.

Lastly, to all you athiests out there, I want to apologize. For the atrocities I and my fellow Christians have committed throughout the ages. I have judged many without judging myself first. I was wrong and I hope you can forgive me. I also hope that one day you will see Jesus for who He really is and not for who we make Him out to be.

    God bless you,

“You know that emptiness and loneliness…that feeling you have sometimes at the end of the day when you are done occupying yourself with life and with other people, and you’re just left with yourself?” – Liz

Nope. I cannot say I know that feeling at all.

I’m somewhat aghast that you would even assume that the above is a standard train of thought.

Almost as ignorant as saying “You know how since you don’t have faith you like to kill people? Because like there is no reason to be moral if you don’t have a god to fear?”

Faith has no greater effect on the human psyche than just being optimistic. There are mountains of evidence that support this.

However being faithful validates every extremists that exists because whenever they do something people accept it because “Well some folks don’t do that so it isn’t a bad idea to let it spread.”

There are women battered and beaten, mutilated, and disemboweled. Their children skewered and burned upon stakes. Why? Because they happen to be apart of a different literary group than their opponents.

There are men who are beheaded and their corpse dragged through the streets because they choose to believe in a different book.

How retarded would it look if star wars fans quite literally started murdering star trek fans? We wouldn’t accept it at all.

The universe is absolutely positively beautiful and I find it not only insulting to history itself but also to ones own ability to think that we would attribute something so remarkable to something so childish as religion (of any realm).

God killed babies in the bible…how the HELL do you say “Well shit happens lets run with this deity he seems logical.”

They were freaking infants, they had nothing to do with the situation. You don’t murder someones kids to get back at them, that is so heartless its mind boggling.

You don’t slaughter entire cities just to make a point.

You don’t flood entire continents to make a point.

These actions would have any perpetrator condemned (although the last one might require an interview first). Yet they are overlooked with ease.

Shit the bible tells you that you can sell your daughter off. With shit like that who decides what we take literal and what we don’t?

It is that ambiguity that makes it dangerous. The ability of anyone to use it for their own gain. It has been the most powerful tool in the last two thousand (and arguably further to be fair) years for mass murder. Even if world leaders don’t believe in a religion they will use it to motivate their people to kill without question and it is extremely effective.

There is nothing more powerful than fear, if you can tap into someones fear you can do things to them and make them do things that would otherwise be unthinkable. There is no greater fear than the unknown and no greater unknown than what happens to our conscious once we die. This abuse is monstrous and should be treated as such.

I look up at the stars and marvel, I look at all live and am filled with awe, I see trees reaching for the clouds and am at peace. I live in a universe that is full of almost too many things to speak of and that is fantastic.

I just don’t see how one can take the romantic notion of a universe that has come together over a multi billion year companionship of time and space and trivialize that down to a few thousand year old hat trick.

Wow – all this b/c Superman kicked Jesus’s arse! Sounds like some people are just sore losers. Maybe it’s b/c they are experiencing some cognitive dissonance … maybe it even goes something like this:

“I’ve been taught an elaborate set of ideas in a particular thought pattern that is a circular positive feedback loop so that it perpetuates itself through generations, preserving the ideas are associated with it.

“As human beings have since developed empirical explanations for things now considered ordinary, which ancient people thought were supernatural and presence of a god, these ideas I’ve been taught as true seem more and more troubling, uncomfortable to me, and the logical part of my brain sometimes says ‘um, does this REALLY make sense, could this REALLY be for real … Oh wait, I’m doubting my faith again! No more of these crazy thoughts!!’

… Then I deal with with my internal cognitive dissonance through strong emotions and go on big rants, speaking in generalizations, demonstrating my lack of ability to put forth a logical argument, and projecting outward instinctual emotions like fear and anger.

    * * *

Atheists don’t hate you … we are just amused (and yes, troubled) by these powerful self-preserving and self-replicating mythologies that have been passed down generations under the infallible guise of ‘if you question this, or ask why, or even change any belief, you will be punished’

Then we patiently try to reason … patiently (with a little light sarcastic humor to keep our sanity!)

On another completely ‘unrelated’ note (promise), the act of bypassing & shutting down of logical reasoning has been studied in neuroscience and specific thought patterns have been identified in the brains of ex-cult members, helping us better understand why such thought patterns are so hard to break even though they go against reality, reason, logic, and the fundamental aspects of personality development, etc.

  64. Calladus Says:

    JDG: you said:
“Quit thinking that those who believe in God are the only ones with “faith”…you have beliefs based on life experiences as well”

“Beliefs based on life experience” are a form of trust, not faith. Faith doesn’t require life experience, and Christians believe that faith is of greater value when there is no experience or evidence to back it up.

Atheists don’t have “faith”. We don’t need faith to know that elevators work or that the sun will rise. We know these things will happen through a great deal of past experience.

Children are genetically driven to have “faith” in their parents. This sort of blind faith is a good way to impart a lot of very important knowledge to a child over a short timespan. A child has “faith” in an elevator because he holds his mother’s hand as she steps into one.

But at some point, we grow up. Our child-like faith is supplanted by knowledge and experience. We develop trust in those things that we can explain, that we have evidence for.

For an atheist, an understanding of the world around us based upon experience, evidence and knowledge is an adult position.

Blind faith, faith without the need for evidence, is a child’s position.

There is a God. But let’s not call him or her Jesus. Please!

  69. JDG Says:

    CALLADUS:

I will, respectfully, have to disagree. Faith IS trust. The two words are synonamous. You are referring to the difference between Faith and BLIND Faith, not Faith and Trust.

However, I think that Christians often throw around the term Faith in terms of Blind Faith and they shouldn’t. It is not only foolish, but irresponsible to call people to believe something they don’t have reason to believe. The Christian bible even says that we should be prepared to answer questions about our faith and challenges us to seek the truth wherever possible.

That being said, there are many reasons to believe in a God spelled out by people much more eloquent than I. If you have time and would indulge me, I would really recommend listening to one of Tim Keller’s speeches from the tour he did for his book “the Reason for God”. You could google it (in fact one of his lectures was given AT Google’s headquarters!) or you could find them at http://www.veritas.org.

Finally, I appreciate your differentiation between the beliefs of children and those of adults. There certainly is maturing that needs to take place in all of us. That is one reason why I am always leary of children who commit their lives to Christ…how do they know what they are really committing to? But if you won’t believe anything that you have not seen evidence for, then how can you know that your parents ever loved you. How can you know that Europe exhists (assuming you’ve never been there). How can you know that getting hit by a car might be painful? Obviously, you have gathered life experiences that lead you to make a probable guess. You can’t prove everything and so you are left with Faith…a trusting in your current knowledge base.

I will NEVER be able to prove to you God exhists. Nobody can, and declaring so is foolish. However, I can say that it is probable that he exhists. There are MANY reasons to think so (again I will refer you to “The Reason for God” by Tim Keller). But I can’t PROVE it to you, just like you can’t PROVE to me that God doesn’t exhist. We can’t even prove that we aren’t butterflies dreaming that we are communicating over the internet right now!

One last quick example (from Keller):
If I want to hire you to work on my staff, I can do all the research in the world. I can run background checks, conduct interviews, look over your resume. However, I can never PROVE that you will be a good worker, until I commit to hiring you. Only then will I know. The same is true for God. Without committing to Him, you can’t know if He is real.

Anyways, thanks for the conversation. I think it is fascinating to talk with athiests and realize that you don’t have to be a crackpot to believe what you do. If we had more dialogue like this, I think we’d be much better off.

Lets talk about comparative analyses about two most used icons for humans based on scientiphical approach of Theology.

Jesus was invented by degenerated sodomites and other freaks in general, the Jesus character was mainly based on Danko legend. Danko like Jesus was created by degenerated idiots who liked human sufferings and victimism for some irratoinal reasons, mainly becosue the authors were completely crazy. Jesus is obviously representing a young asshole who was raped in the ass and spent all his time walking around mindlessly talking with other assholes until he was obviously executed, becosue you know, people hates midless asshole saying bullshit all day.

Superman on the other hand was created by professionals who studied real Greek Theology and Mythology, therefore Superman represents the real metaphysical superior being, whatewer normal human being might ever wish to be. The only obvious mistake that limits SUperman character form being defined created universally flawless, is th efcat that he was missing his twin sister – superwoman.

Infact if Superman would have been created in the beginning toghether with Superwoman as a super human couple of twins Superboy and Supergirl, DC comics woul dhave invented the flawless Theological superbeings with no rivals ever capable to equal the super twin couple.

  79. Alex Odinson Says:

It looks plausible that Superman character was invented by the assholes who directly descend from the original assholes who created the original Jesus character.

It is evident the parallel unplausible situation that links Superman to Jesus in terms of unexisting sexuality for both characters.

It is obvious that any kid who is not braindead will start wondering why Superman like Jesus was depicted like an impotent loner who is unable to find himself a decent female coupling partner.

It is obvious if you are not a demented religious freak and are able to express your thoughts in a stright manner, Superman is not supposed have acoupling female partner obviouly becouse was invented by the same demented degenerates who are assholes and therefore believe that human beings might exist as asshole loners masturbating or being anally raped.

With the only difference that ancient assholes wanted people to believe that Jesus was an asshole loner because was simply born in a barn, while Superman is supposed to live as an asshole loner becouse be is supposed to be an alien from planet crypton.

Anyway assholes might make gift to the human race someday, they might stop writing their absurd gay bullshit supposed to disguise people.

If it is clear to anyone that both characters are so unplausible for normal human beings becouse both belong to the demented fantasies of mentally impaired gay assholes. And that if you are not an asshole you can understand that there is no rePly a righteous part to choose from, let’s say that Supeeman is mainly preferred by normal kids becouse they like science fiction, while Jesus is preferred by assholes who like mindless fantasy.

  81. Toby Says:

“But think about this for a second; you are born to die, all are, if there is not GOD, then life is meaningless.”

This has got to be one of the stupidest things I have ever read, and unfortunately this isn’t the first time I’ve read it. Tell me, what exactly is the point of living forever? Where is your motivation, knowing that you have all of eternity to do something, no matter how trivial, that is to say there are even things to do in heaven. The very point of life is that we die, otherwise life would quickly overpopulate itself and then life can’t even function. The world is all the more beautiful because we’re doomed, because we appreciate what we have while we are still here, and we put our efforts into living a successful and happy life.

And to all you christians out there, think about this. According to your bible, there is no sin so great that you can’t get into heaven. All it requires is that you believe in God/Jesus and make him your saviour. This means that some of the worst mass murderers, serail killers, and countless other horrible people are getting into your so-called heaven. Meanwhile scientists, doctors and good people are going to hell, simply for not believing in a book that doesn’t even add up scientifically, not to mention quite rediculous. Talking bushes? Parting the sea? Surviving 40 years walking a desert desolate of life? Come on, have some common sense.

Personally I would absolutely LOVE it if God were real, and his bible was a test to distinguish between the rational and logical thinkers and those that live by blind faith. The mark of a good teacher is one who gets his students to question his teachings, so that they can have a better understanding and realise its truth or lack of.

Remember when you first learnt that Santa Claus isn’t real? At first you were sad, because you thought there was a person that would give you whatever you wanted as long as you were a good boy/girl. But then you realised that you still got presents despite him not being real, and these presents were from loving parents and friends, and even if they werent what you’d wished for, they were still gifts given with love. Also, if you always believed in Santa Claus you would not give presents of your own, expecting some guy in the sky to give them instead. By this you are depriving people of joy, not out of intention, but out of ignorance. Overall, you are happier that Santa Claus doesn’t exist because the reality of the situation is much better, that people get presents out of love and kindness rather than reward. It is worth noting that once a kid learns of this truth, he doesn’t suddenly start misbehaving and doing bad things. This is basically what atheism is. It’s celebrating our humanity and the good things we do, not out of fear of punishment or possibility of reward (which should only be used when dealing with children) but out of love for our fellow man and our strive for a good life and loving people around us, which are presents that you never tire of.

Besides, living in a good life purely for the fear/reward scheme is not living at all. You should always do something because YOU believe it is right and honourable, not just so you’ll get something out of it afterwards. That right there, is childish, self-serving and counterproductive.

Your vitriolic post will all but ensure another ~100,000 souls are saved. And for that all Christians are indebted to you. :) So first and foremost, THANK YOU for posting this, my brother.

If I may, I’d like to play a few hands at your comment table here. I can’t resist. Please bear in mind my comments are all in good nature. I haven’t any axes to grind with you; just a few pokes of rebuttal..

First of all Jesus was the God of LOVE. Superman was a God of.. STRENGTH.. or power.. or something like that. So the comparison is baseless to begin with. I could see if you wanted to compare Jesus with say, Budda, but Superman? Ok, ok, you did it in fun, so you win that hand.

One more hand. You forgot to mention the biggest difference between Superman and Jesus: Jesus wasn’t ashamed of who he was. Superman was essentially a COWARD who couldn’t even ask a girl out on a date without falling to pieces. Superman also had a weakness so great it literally paralyzed him when he even got within a few feet of it. Jesus had no weaknesses. None. Whereas Superman was frequently distracted and fell considerably short of his goals, often disappointing his fans and leaving them HOPELESS (as all superheroes seem to do), Jesus completed his mission 100% without a single error. His performance was absolutely perfect all the way up to his death, which he FREELY accepted. Yes, even his DEATH was his choice.

Finally, all readers should know the term “Superman” was coined by Frederick Nietzsche. He used it to idealize a “super” form of human who could form his own morals in a vacuum as he saw fit. Hence he would be able to live by his own rules, his own morals, and society would then no longer be reliant on God. Of course Nietzsche went completely mad eventually and lived out his later years in the care of his mother, a complete invalid, but the his philosophy lives on, and it is on full display in this intriguing atheist article comparing Superman to Jesus.

God bless you all, including the very talented and creative writer of this article.

It sure is. How amusing. 100 years from now we’ll all be dead. Wonder who will have lived the most meaningful lives? Done the most good? Left the best legacy? Had any sense of meaning and purpose at all? Yep, it’s fun to make stuff up, fun to use the F word, fun to use the S word, fun to live life however… we’re so LIBERATED! Fun, fun, fun. Happy, brilliant, well-defended, reasonable, scientific, intellectual path to death and the grave. Fun! But of course it’s all about fun!

  86. Averre Says:

    @Mark

    “Jesus had no weaknesses. None”-Mark

Silly little Bible-thumper with no knowledge of what you speak, Jesus was a man, born of flesh and blood. Hence he had the same weaknesses that we do.

Jesus died, after he was forced to wear a crown of thorns and his side pierced by a spear, which your little black book claims that he was bleeding. If your little mind is like the other little minds that accept the Shroud of Tourin as proof of Jesus then one would notice the blood stains where his hands and feet were nailed to the cross along with the crown of thorns.

Now if you had any real grasp of logic, which is fairly obvious by your post that you do not, then one could assume that he could die from starvation, exposure or indeed crucifixion.

Jesus not a coward? really? hmmm…

“And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, ‘My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.’ And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, the hour might pass from him. And he said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. YET NOT WHAT I WILL, BUT WHAT YOU WILL.’ Mark 14:32-42

Seems to me your little God-man was having cold feet about his own death, in fact one would even say he was a bit scared and being a bit cowardly about something in which he KNEW would happen.

I love people like you Mark, i really do…you make this shit way too easy, no wonder they call you ’sheep’

Enjoy your life of blind faith and constant ignorance..or, and read up on that Bible of yours.

    Cheers,

    Averre.

Salute to you my friend. I almost spit out my beer on that last line: “which fictional character is better” for sure hahaha

  88. jugglingbuffoon Says:

I take offense at this article. Superman is most definitely NOT a fictional character. He is real in my heart and he speaks to me every day.

  89. Dilok Sherlekar S Says:

Just rubbish!! Please don’t think that millions of people around this world are fools…. If superman is better than Jesus then why there is nobody to worship him when millions are there for Jesus??? No logic in this explanation…And i wonder how come a person be so illiterate??

    I would like to tell u a story…If time permits, please listen…

Once i went to a barber shop to cut my hair. That barber was telling to another person in the shop that God doesn’t exist in this world. And he was asking a question to me – “You tell me, if God exist, how come lot of people die everyday? Y God is not seeing this??”

I really felt angry about his goosy attitude…But controlled myself without saying anything.

After my hair cut I went out of the shop. Just outside the barber shop, I saw a mad person with long beard and hair crossing the road and shouting at people.

Seeing him, I went inside the barber shop and told the barber that no barber exist in this world. He was shocked and asked me then who is he? and he told that barbers do exist in this world.

Then i asked him, if barbers exist how come that mad person outside his shop be there? Why his beard is not shaved or his hair is uncut?

Hearing this the barber replied, he hasn’t come to his shop for shaving or hair cutting & that is y he is like that.

Hearing this I replied, the same is the case with God also…When people go to the God, he listens…When people don’t go to him they God don’t see them…and they do die…

He understood his mistake and asked me to forgive him for saying such non sense…I told him that God is like a father who forgives the mistakes of his children…So pray to go for that…

    Now you please understand….

God is love…He is not a superman…He is down to earth…Jesus taught us to love each other and not to fight like a superman…Learn to love everybody….Make difference to this world…No matter what the religion is, when u start loving people like wt u have urself, you can feel his presence and grace… Spread love, joy and happiness & make this world a better place to live….May God bless u :)

  94. Andrew W Says:

I find it truly sad that Christian folks, I assume them to be, find it appropriate to come on to a website clearly for atheists and begin bringing up the issue of Jesus as a historical person. I find it even funnier that they feel it will bother us when they say posting this article just saved a bunch of people (remember we don’t believe in salvation). The best part of the whole thing though really has to be that these peace loving Christians come on her and try to start fights using arguments which have been both addressed and left high and dry by multiple atheists.

  95. Mercer Says:

    Interesting!!!! and funny

  96. Mercer Says:

Ok, I will try again to write because of the stupid conection!!!
Question 1: Anyway, in few words, if you don’t believe in Jesus or God, when he comes back (as some of you claim) we are fucked right? Well, what about the small tribes from Amazon or Africa? or people that believe in a different God (Allah, Budha, etc) they are fucked too? That’s a bit selfish isn’t it? I mean, come on (Jimmy from South Park). You KILL heaps of people for not believing in your ways. That’s just stupid. It doesn’t matter if you were good all your life, helped alot of people but believed in a different religion, you’re fucked coz Jesus makes the rules.WTF? oh ,you have a free will to believe in what you want but if you don’t believe in me, you’re going to Hell.(if there is such a thing)
    2. Back in the days people were thinking that thunders are comming from the Gods. In nowadays people know where thunders are comming from right? Well most of us know. People, humans have always used the supernatural power as being the cause or explanation of things that they could not explain. Simple as that. Some people cannot cope with reality facts nor they can explain things of life. So they turn to a higher power that is the cause of ot all. I mean…come on.
The sky is black and is about to rain…the gods are angry. How stupid we, as humans were.Making sacrifices, killing people and kids for something that did not exist. The idea of God (or gods) was there way before so called Jesus came on Earth. Greek gods, Native American gods, Asian gods and so forth.
Question 2: Why Jesus did not come to Earth later or earlier? How come Jesus “came” to Earth right when some fuckups decided to write something to manipulate the people and give them reasons to kill (in the name of God…puleaaaaase!!!). And Jesus said “Ok mate, let’s kill some mofo’s for not believing my crap” One thing here: fear keeps you stupid and stupid people are easier to manipulate. “Is not my will to manipulate you to become rich beyond my dreams, is Gods will. Yeah right!”

Questions 3. Why would someone(God or Jesus or whoever) would kill just to “test their faith”? That is just plain stupid and it makes me angry when people believe in that shit. “Ok folks, today you will die just bacause I am running a faith test, ok? I know you all are innocent people but this is just a test, so please don’t panic.” Very selfish act, like we (humans) are, therefore we created these fantasy.

Therefore, the only thing you should belive in is your self. Believe that you can achieve anything in life, believe that you can do only good things and be proud of your self when you succeed. The rest doesn’t count. Religion is something created by humans, and everything will have an explanation sometimes in the future, in the exact same way the thunder had its explanation. Sometimes we will explain ghosts and UFO’s, and even religion and why it has perpetuated over so many years. believe that!!!

    http://delveintojesus.com/articles/27/Evidence-for-Jesus-Outside-the-Bible.aspx

  98. Mercer Says:

Star, my friend. You better get your facts right. First of all, you posted a link to a website that’s full of crap. How can someone be sure that Jesus didn’t die. The wrighter of that article was talking about the resurection like he was there. How can you be sure that he was pierced with a spear by a soldier? Were YOU there to certify that? Oh wait…the book sais that and also you’ve seen it in the Passion of Christ. Please mate, wake up. I am not contesting the fact that Jesus did not exist, altough hard to believe but I would like to see the real objective proof of his existence. I’ve heard Yeti really exists and the monster from Lochness (or whatever)was really there. I can even see the pictures. What stronger proof than that? I can even wright a book about it and make other people believe the same thing. For your info they are all fake and it was proven as being a hoax. Or should I believe all the drawings from the walls from the stone age? That is called imagination and I think the Bible is just a SF book that did good and also bad. I can only think of Scientology (religion created by a SF writer – L. Ron Hubbard) that bases their believes on some writings that could make a good reading but only that. Wake up and get your facts right. Look around you through a different prism and see it as it supposed to be seen.

  99. TW Says:

To everyone who is referring to references to Christ to support an historical Jesus — um, you do know that “Christ” was a title and not a name, right? The Greek equivalent of the Hebrew Mosiach, or Messiah, the Anointed One. There were lots of Christs, or would-be Messiahs, running around back then, and lots of them were put to death by the powers in charge. (There’s also a school of thought that considers John the Baptist to have been the would-be Messiah, and Jesus just one of his disciples — which ended badly after Salomé may or may not have done her little dance.)

However — references to Jeshue bar Josef outside of the four Gospels and any apocrypha that was conveniently dumped at the Council of Nicaea? Zero. The one mention by Josephus has been well-proven to be a later fraudulent insertion perpetrated by the Bishop Eusebius. Anything with the word Christos in it is just part of the zeitgest of the era — about as meaningful as taking a century worth of Nobel Peace Prizes and thinking that they all refer to the same person.

  104. creationist Says:

Jesus is better than superman because he created superman.

    poned.

now for being serious. Jesus Christ, why is that name so put down, i mean, would you swear with Allah’s name or some other gods name in front of their followers, no! especially with the Islamic. Jesus Christ is unique because he was real. other religions such as Islam kill off Christians, when Christians have only been wanting to introduce their faith.

Myth: Christians shove their faith down our throats.
really? so, what do angry Buddhists do with clubs if they want you to convert to their faith? or better yet! radical Islam! what do they do to convert you? ill let you answer.

  105. creationist Says:

Also, Jesus is and isn’t a “fuzzy wuzzy guy” he is a judge and a savior who has to judge the people who come before him and do what must be done. if Jesus only judged on a certain amount sin, then he wouldn’t be perfect. he would tolerate sin, evil, something that is a polar opposite from holiness. but he came down to save us before we are judged. that is where we get the quote: Jesus is love. not because Jesus was a hippy, no, he came to bring the creations he made to be with him like we were once.

please no flaming after this post. if you do flame. it just shows how intolerant you are after all your so called, “tolerance of religion.”

Love this post, I like to think of religious people as pests or peasants, unintelligible halfwits who look to their Sky Daddy and his bastard son for guidance, whats his name again, Jeebus was it? Unfortunately life does not have a happy ending, its survival of the fittest, and when you finally croak after a long hard life you get buried and you get eaten by some fucking insects. Im no happier than you about it believe me! But I choose not to delude myself with false hopes of imaginary friends and bouncing castles in the sky. Grow up you feckless idiots or fuck off please.

  108. Oliver Says:

I was a devout Christian for 25 years before I decided to give the various atheist arguments an actual chance. I went through the Bible from a purely literary point of view and put my feelings and faith aside. Not only does the Bible have many, maaaaany inconsistencies throughout its entirety, but the facts against it definitely outweigh any kind of “faith” that was indoctrinated by my childhood. It’s been revised and revised time and time again over the years to fit with the social trends of the present, and the leaders of Christianity 500 years ago would be completely appalled at the way we live today. Don’t get me wrong; there are some very basic and good messages in the Bible like “Thou shalt not kill” but then it’s up to the reader to place the line between good and bad morals.
Never though I’d say this but thank God I’m not a Christian anymore. Reading the Bible is the fastest way to turn someone into an atheist. :D

  109. jesuspickmesomefruit Says:

Pitin, little made up stories like that show no support for the existence of a higher power. If anything it shows how someone survived a near accident then tries to attribute their survival outside of themselves.

    Try again.

  110. jesuspickmesomefruit Says:

To all the christians trying to make the argument that jesus is a verifiable historical figure… there was likely a guy named jesus that lived. They also likely have his and his families bones in the ossuaries they dug up a few years ago. They historical person of jesus is not really is what is being disputed, but the supernatural fairy tale jesus that comes back from the dead and walks on water that people dont believe in.

oliver, you could not have been a devout christian for 25 years. Ask Lee Strobel, he studied it and guess where it got him, and he was an Atheist too!

  117. JJ Says:

I’m totally for getting all snarky at religious extremists, but dude, Jesus wasn’t fictional. Sure, he probably wasn’t God’s son born of an immaculate conception, but he still existed as a nice guy who wandered around being all prophetical…

  122. Holley Says:

I’m disappointed in both of you. Atheists, stop being such dicks. You’re all just as bad as the christians who don’t give anything a second thought. You’re not right just because you say so. Back shit up with tons and tons of evidence[that's what sets us apart] and stop acting like 10 year olds who think they’re so damn smart just because they found out that santa claus isn’t real. Just give people the respect you want back, christ almighty.

And christians, why the hell would you come to an atheist website to debate with hardcore militant atheists? Do you think you’re going to change anyone’s minds? PROTIP-You’re not.

Guy calling himself “creationist”-I’ll admit, I judged you by your name, thought to myself-this guy must be an idiot. But then I gave you a chance and read your stuff. I really wanted you to prove me wrong.

“Jesus Christ is unique because he was real. other religions such as Islam kill off Christians, when Christians have only been wanting to introduce their faith.”
Yeah, christians have totally been the epitome of love and tolerance for other religions and viewpoints throughout the years, right? I truly hope you don’t seriously believe that, I’d like to think people can’t just ignore mountains and mountains of history like that.

“Myth: Christians shove their faith down our throats.
really? so, what do angry Buddhists do with clubs if they want you to convert to their faith? or better yet! radical Islam! what do they do to convert you? ill let you answer.”
Really? Because none of my buddhist friends have ever tried to convert me, or tell me I’m wrong and they are right. They are also much more tolerant of my views, even if they’re very different from their own. Even so, if all other religions were just as bad as christianity is about shoving faith down people’s throats, your excuse is still just “Well they do it too so it’s okay!!!” and that’s something a child would say. Grow up.

“please no flaming after this post. if you do flame. it just shows how intolerant you are after all your so called, “tolerance of religion.””
So basically you’re saying “Now no one respond and if you do you’re intolerant.” Again, grow the hell up, kid. We all have the right to say whatever we want to you. If you didn’t want a response, you wouldn’t have come to an atheist website to share your christian viewpoint.

  123. Holley Says:

A.)You can’t “remember” most likely because you’ve never done any research on the subject.
B.)You meant to say “scientific evidence”, not “historical evidence”. If you’re asking for written accounts by apes historically documenting their own evolution, then by golly, you might just be sillier than I originally thought.

If that isn’t meaning then you ain’t living.

Funny how the believers claim evidence for Jesus even though there is in fact none at all, this is a historical fact not a matter of opinion.

Even if there was evidence that Jesus did in fact exist, that does not prove anything he said was true or he was divine.

Getting all worked up about whether he was or was not a mythical character is pretty pointless as it proves nothing about the claims made by the bible.

  129. Josh Says:

Before I say anything else, I would just like to say that I only read the first couple of replies for this post, so if something was said in the later replies that I happen to be repeating or whatever, forgive me. Anyway, really the only thing I want to comment on is the thought of Jesus being mentioned in some historical text other than the Bible (which is really isn’t a “historical” book, but whatever). I would just like to mention that Jesus, when translated back into Arabic, is a shortened form of Joshua (I know my name is Josh, weird right?), but I could be wrong, I don’t speak Arabic. On top of that Christ was most likely not his actual name, since Christ comes from the Greek word meaning messiah, and I doubt that Mary and Joseph named their son Jesus (or Joshua, whatever) Messiah. So when “Moses” said that there was no Jesus mentioned in any history book, it could be because it was written as his full name Joshua. Just something to think about, again I could be wrong, but I just wanted to point that out.

  130. King Kong Says:

Micaela, grow the fuck up. I mean really, you think your message will change someones life? Actually it did…my day actually. You must’ve been a really naughty person back in the days and NOW you are trying to use any possible channel to show off your faith, hopping that before coming back, Jesus or whoever will read this post and add an extra perk for you in Heaven. How do I explain feelings and all that? Well, it’s not only human, cats, dogs and some other animals do feel that. I think!!. Wars and all that ? Well there are always going to be some retard that will manipulate some other retards and there you go …you got your self a dicatator.
Please take your stupid comments somewhere else, and start living your life as you want to live it. Look at your self and wonder for one second if you really belive in things that you’ve been shoved down your throat since you were a kid.

Well, as you said, I hope this message will change your life. C’mon ..dare to live your life..believe me ..there is only one chance you have.

I’m going to say my piece here.

We definitely live in a time where everything is secular, where the new cool thing to do is to go out of one’s way and make a mockery of Christ… With us “feeble Christians” we’re like okay we get it, your arguments are so old and played out keep talking. It’s the new fad, the new flavor of the month, “let’s all go out of our way to make these little Christians inferior, let’s dedicate our entire lives because WE have NO LIVES and ridicule them and take their humanity away from them. Heck let’s make a f**king forum labeled 10 Reasons why Superman is better than Jesus… yes that will get them… oooooh I’m cool… hehehehehehe aren’t we so funny take that Christ hehehehehe… We’re mature”

Here’s the truth… There are really only two religions in this world. There’s the religion of God, as a Traditional Catholic (Pre-VaticanII mindset) I believe my religion is right, I even believe the other religions are wrong, I have to believe this or else I’d be a liar, I’ll even say I’m not perfect always in following my beliefs but I still believe it’s the truth… and then there’s the religion of Man (aka Devil’s religion).

Long story short. The religion of God sets the rules of the universe, sets what’s right and wrong and in the end holds everyone accountable for their actions on earth.

Atheism falls along with many other false religions in the category of the religion of Man. Basically Man’s belief substitutes God’s truth. People who fall into this sunconciously share a common unoriginal mindset. They ALL, yes they ALL think like this:

“I’ll believe whatever is convenient for me.”
    “I don’t believe because there’s no evidence.”

It’s the religion of convenience where you’re not really held accountable for anything, you won’t be punished for anything. Athiests really enjoy this aspect. All atheists do think alike (yes I’m generalizing because it’s true) and these are your common character traits…

    1. Atheists are very arrogant, lack humility and many are elitists.
    - It’s easily reflected in the disrespect and hostility towards those who believe in something that’s not material. Look above, Christ w/ a Rifle a very ignorant picture and they know it’s offensive to others and yet they still do it.
    - The idea that Someone or something is better and greater than them offends them.
    - They always try to come across as “Intellectuals”, they’ll bring up Darwinism, works from Nietzche or Karl Marx etc. and try to present this material with a pompous elite-like attitude as if it’s their own material meanwhile all they’ve done is regurgitate and quote in verbatim.

    2. Atheists are very closed minded and ignorant.
    - They will commonly use arguments like “First of all the bible is wrong because it contradicts itself.” I’ll ask them back, “well what passages are you talking about?” Most of the time they won’t even know, this shows their manipulative dishonesty.
    - They’ll make comments like “Catholic Priests are ALL pedophiles” which is cheap generalization with no merit. Many people don’t know this and even Catholics don’t know this, when a Priest does commit such a crime, they lose their office, meaning their void, they cease being a priest. I’ll admit, Vatican II hasn’t been the best and dealing with this issue though.
    - Their idea of something that’s not materially seen cannot exist, is obliterated when you ask them, “If you don’t believe in God because you can’t physically see Him… Then prove to me that you love your daughter, mother, wife etc.?” They’ll hug them but that’s not proving anything… you’re physically putting your arms around them, you’re not physically loving them, just like you don’t see God i don’t see a f**king an energy beam of love going between you and whomever… such a f**king dumb argument.

    3. Atheists are bad-willed.
    - They will only do something that’s convenient to them or advantageous to them. You’ll present them with truth in good charity and they won’t even make an effort because it’ll takes time and because the material opposes their ideas. If you could put all the effort to read Marx et al., then you can pick up a bible, read a few passages a day, actually try to understand it with humility.
    - Athiests will judge the Catholic Church because of inquisitions, falsely claim that Catholic Church are murderers meanwhile… some of the most notorius Athiests were responsible for killing millions of Christians, jews etc…. Athiests will conveniently forget this… 20 f**kin million people killed by Stalin… an Atheist… 2.5 million Pol Pot… an Athiest… 40 million Mao Zhedong… an Athiest
    - If you want to generalize, you Atheists by far are the most dangerous breed of people, and the fact that you don’t believe in a higher spiritual authority is scary.
    - Who’s to say if given the chance you wouldn’t put a bullet to my ‘inferior’ head if the law wouldn’t hold you accountable for it.

    4. Athiests fit the category of “B*tches talk (b*tch as in Atheists), real men Walk the walk (men as in believers)
    - You criticize and b*tch like little girls in mentioning things like, “Catholic church is an evil organization they just hoard money…” and I say… uh buddy… “We just raised $4000 for single mothers support, $8000 for our campaign at the church for cancer reseach… ummm what did you do? what organization are you a part of that does this… oh… that’s right nothing… why because you talk like a b*tch, accuser and don’t back up your own words with actions…”

I know I’m going to get a lot of hostility towards and I already know how all of you Athiests will respond…

    1. Shove your cross up your….
    2. Take a gun and shoot yourself…
    3. Bible-thumper get lost
    4. This material refutes the bible blah blah blah… *yawn* it’s getting old.

I’d be surprised if any of you respond with tact, class and humility AND with ORIGINAL material…

Just to show you why this believer comes from a faith that is of good… I will actually take 5 min of my time and pray for you guys… Aren’t we believers so evil…

  135. The Crusader Says:

    PS.

Categorizing the characters of the following users based on their comments, first impressions, the way they carry their arguments, openess to truth.

    KJB = rational and tactful
Josh = rational, means well but might fall into the hype of problems with translations argument
Harrison = Nice guy, though doesn’t believe he seems naive and well versed
Minionette = Cocky, bad willed bitch b*tch you hear it when he goes on saying, “We athiests don’t hate you etc. blah blah
Lifer = Egotistical f**k, who regurgitates arguments, completely bad-willed and will never be open to a different opinion…
The Perfesser = Name says it all, he thinks he’s on some super realm of human intelligence… and then he woke up…
Ryu Murdock = Means well, but most of his arguments fall into theosophic, freemasonic zeitgeist lies of Jesus being the same as Dionysus, Krishna etc…
PhuckJesus = Low -life ignorant Pr*ck, seen many like him, mouths spew constant garbage and they love it. Would probably murder believers and enjoy if he either got paid for it or if in man’s law, the courts would not punish him for it. Definite Stalin wannabe b*tch panzy.
Mercer = Ambitious type of guy, that doesn’t believe not because he hates God etc. because the value system of the religious faith interferes with what he wants out of life, you can see it when he says “believe that you can achieve in life.”
Liz = Head on straight, respectful and rational and open to truth…
Mike O = P*ssy f*ck to swear at a woman, another murderer if given the chance
Creationist = Does not roll with the so called times, maintains integrity, even if faced my many odds
Moses = band-wagon jumper on secular thoughts

  136. The Crusader Says:

Once again these are just my humble opinions, on certain people I’d to think that I’m wrong. I probably am I hope, just going on first impressions…

  137. Mercer Says:

@ The Crusader…mate in some respect you are right about most of the people here in general and me in particular. I’d say that you don’t know any of us and I think it would be a bit shallow to make a description of some of people that posted here. However, I do not have anything against any other creligion and I find equally stupid as an atheist to hate a believer as I find a Allah believer hating a Jesus believer. Everybody can be and believe in whatever they want….I don’t give fuck. What makes me angry and upset sometimes is how some believers close their eyes and don’t see the truth or fact in front of their eyes. They accept anything, pay anything (see scientology et all ) just to have an acceptance from a group of people with same ideals or acceptance from a superior level beyond our understanding. Furthermore, peope that try hard to shove their religion down your troath or do crazy things to kids because is their “God’s will”. Yeah , yeah …some atheist were dictators and killers as well as other religious people but that doesn’t change the fact that you have good and bad people in this world. I am not trying to defent anyone, what I am trying to say is that people will need to live their lifes and take resposability for their actions and act in a way that will not affect my liberty or your liberty.
Yes, it is true, I am not a believer or anything and yes I don’t hate the idea of God but I am not embracing it. Too many things (the multitude of gods back in the days and in our days, too many uncertainties in the Bible and many other religions, the constant need of humans to have someone else take responsability for their actions (see Stones Age gods from caves), unlimited imagination of human beings and so forth) For me there is no difference between the way people use to act back in the days and nowadays. Same behaviour different way of manifestation. They had their temples back in the days, now we have churches and temples and also TV programs and so forth. Imagine, just for one minute how this world would look without religion. Is like trying to imagine a pig fly, right? Back in the medieval times they have an explanation for almost everything ..GOD. Whoever tried to prove otherwise was burned alive (i.e. Galileo Gallilei). For hundreds of years this religious behaviour has been imprinted in our behaviou and in some cases forced down to their kids too, so there is no wonder that even today we have people that are fanatics and ready to die for their religion. Maybe oneday, I hope that most of us will (it might sound stupid nd cheesy) understand that say ..if there is a God he will not want to force something or kill in his name. If that stupid god want’s that …well he can go and fuck him self because I am not going to kill or torture someone just because I thought is right. Same thing applies to atheists. If you don’t believe that …well good for you..me neither but I am not making a show and promote hate towards other religions, show no respect for other people and act like I don’t give a fuck. Well, I do give fuck as some of these people, religious or not, might be your mother, father, wife, brother or anything else and you interact with them everyday and acting like a selfish prick won’t do any good. So atheist or not, act like a normal human being.
Hell yeah I would like to kick some of those mormons ass, or Jehova witnesses who come to my door and try to show me the “way of God” but I can only say “sorry mate, not interested and please don’t come here anymore” and let them go their way. It makes me angry that some are 15yo or 25yo that are doing it for free instead of doing a miriad of other things that would make their life better. Or who knows ..they might be happy that way.

I sincerely hope you understand my point(s).

Jesus Very much so DID exist! There is no denying it!!
And further more he may very well have been our savior!
Unfortunately he got jealous of Chuck Norris’ beard cause it was by far better than his, and had him written out of the bible… BIG MISTAKE!
Chuck messed that boy up bad. He wont be saving anything anymore.
They recently dug up Jesus’ skeleton and he had a distinctive Round-house-kick-delivered-by-Chuck-Norris shaped mark in his upper chest area.

Sorry Jesus, your going to hell; Messing with the Norris is actually classed as suicide… God doesnt like suicide…

  139. KasiSE Says:

You know … pardon my intrusion, but what I’m observing here is a bunch of people who are REALLY ANGRY about whatever has happened to them on account of organized religion. I GET THAT, I’ve been there … but, why throw the baby out with the bathwater?

There is historical proof that Jesus existed, but why is it so difficult to recognize that what he taught has been torchured, twisted, and mis-used by organized religion? IMHO, organized religion is an interloper to control the minds of the masses … and this is a comment from a spiritual person. Jesus was an enlightened being who was simply saying “know yourself” … know that you are part of something really special, so respect yourself and others. How much more simple can it possibly be?

Don’t reject the mystery and wonder of whatever caused us to be here or the connection that we might all have … reject those who try to organize it into something they can monetize and control. Organized religion thinks the masses are too stupid to find a way to live peacefully, in harmony and understanding without their intervention but MORE blood has been spilled because of the conflicts between organized religions.

Maybe think about redefining the term Atheist to be those who reject control by organized religions of the world. When Jesus said “The kingdom of heaven is within you” … he meant it … that spark of life that we feel so profoundly inside when we look an incredible sunset or the face of a child. Now, I know the world can be an ugly place (hell, is it?) but that only serves to make us turn “inward” to learn how to find our own connection to others and to find our own peace.

I have no idea what it will take for everyone to reach that point, but person-by-person who does that is living on earth, but also in heaven and when everyone reaches that point we will ALL be in heaven … and that’s ain’t out on a cloud somewhere. That may be almost impossible to imagine how we’ll get there, but it isn’t impossible to conceive of the idea. If we’d all quit polluting, the earth could make for a pretty nice garden, don’t you think?

  140. FabulousRex Says:

You know, I can comfort myself with the knowledge that the good things that I do are done PURELY because I will it, and because I believe it is the right thing to do.

The biggest thing that bugs me about christians is that it seems like the only reason they do anything good is because they’re afraid of punishment. The -many- times that their god has been used to cover up horrible shit really reinforces my thoughts on this matter.

No amount of tautology will help your case, zombie-followers. “If Jesus exists then you’ll be real sorry when you end up in a lake of fire to burn for eternity while we’re living it up in heaven!”

    Spartan response: “If”

  141. KasiSE Says:

Micaela, the tone with which you are “espousing your loving religion” is really mean, judgemental, and hateful. You may not even realize to what degree you sound like a mind-controlled parrot. Since I am NOT an atheist I will tell you that IMHO you are wrong … no one is going to burn in hell, there is more than one life to get it right, and your opinion is no more valid than anyone elses’ here or elsewhere … including mine. But why don’t you try practicing what you preach, huh? Comingn to this forum, ESPECIALLY this forum, and ranting and raving like you did does absolutely no one any good. The only thing that really matter is living our life to the best of our ability and understanding and travelling along whatever path is before us … being genuine and allowing other people to have their path and their life. Shame on you for berrating other people for what they believe and ESPECIALLY for not believing what you believe. I have no problem with an open and honest dialog – presenting a point of view for other people to consider, accept, or reject as they deem is appropriate for them. There is no place for judgement and anger in that type of dialog.

  142. Bosco Says:

Sigh…I’m searching for things in writing a Superman essay and seeing some of the comments here makes me wonder why this site bothers to call itself ‘the good atheist’

Any good atheist who embraces reality would at least attempt to make a good argument. To claim that Jesus of Nazareth is ‘fictional’ is just plainly bad history. There is absolutely no scholar, be it theist or atheist, that can deny that Jesus Christ existed.

One comment wrote “No mention of him anywhere outside the bible.” …..and if you bothered to do some searching, you’ll find out that it is actually SURPRISING how many sources outside of the bible talk about Jesus! Those who normally wrote about Kings, like Jewish historian Josephus (naturally an enemy to the emerging Messianic Judaism of Christianity) affirmed at least the existence of Jesus if not what people at that time believed of him.

The gospels and letters of the NT were written either by eyewitnesses or at least in the lifetime of others who would have been there when Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth.

To laugh and say ‘Jesus is fictional’ is no argument at all but just the judgementalness that you guys laugh at Christians for. If you wanted to support your view so much, don’t do it from a ‘Jesus is fictional’ standpoint…do it from a ‘Jesus of Nazareth is not God’ viewpoint…which is exactly what the Pharisees and other contemporaries of Jesus tried VERY hard to affirm.

Not believing that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah) is one thing, to laugh and think you’re smart for pointing out that Jesus is fictional is just sad. But then of course, if Jesus really did exist, is who he claims to be, died, and resurrected…then that’s obviously something kinda very important :)

  143. Karen Says:

  144. Pili Says:

I’m disgusted at the quantity of aggressive proselytism in this comments section. Seriously, go preach somewhere else, not on an atheist blog like this one. I’m not against people believing what they want, but I’m against people pestering me with their beliefs, mindlessly quoting the Bible and trying to make others ‘guilty’ for not believing in the same things as them.

  146. Pitatim Says:

Amusing comparison. I would like to note, though, that Christ never said what you reference in Claim 9, Luke 19:27. Those are the words of a character in one his parables, not something that he ever said for himself. By analogy, my telling the story of Goldilocks would make me a cannibal when I repeated the wolf’s phrase “All the better to eat you with, my dear.”

  148. THE TRUTH Says:

Check your grammar. The main idea is Jesus doesn’t give a flying fu** and superman would save as many as he could. Superman can fly and Jesus can ride a donkey. Superman can save himself from the cross but Jesus can only cry out for help. Superman is faster than a speeding bullet and Jesus is barely on time. Superman can fly you to heaven, while Jesus says you have to die first and have a spirit of water. Superman doesn’t care if you gamble to make money fast, but Jesus is pissed off because he wants to make you his servant. Superman doesn’t try to make you a servant or his little b!tch but Jesus does.

*Disclaimer* I am an atheist but I have no problem with other religions. I am of the mindset that as long as you have respect for what I believe then I have respect for what you believe.

America is overloaded with spoilt to the core, pampered pets it must make Jesus sick to his stomach to even think about all he did for us and this is what he gets for it – thank God he is the true God and can forgive !!!

  163. Hope Says:

Denying Jesus existed is way off based on a historical stand point. Besides the four separate documents in the new testament based on his life. A Jewish man named Flavius Josephus recorded events of Jesus’ life around 55 AD. He personally spoke to people that lived with Jesus. Other examples are Cornelius Tacitus, Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Seutonius. Just look them up for examples. Or rather you can google whether he historically existed at all. All historical evidence is so strongly pointed towards his existence than anyone at that period.

Superman is based off of Jesus. Pretty awesome website: http://hollywoodjesus.com/superman.htm

I have a problem with number 7, cause superman may be a expert in dozens of languages, but Jesus was able to speak all the languages in the world.

plus Jesus didn’t hide behind a second identity, as Superman did.

And i also see supermans alter-ego as an insult to humans, as Clark Kent is how Superman sees the human race, and what characterizes Clark Kent: Weak, shy, undecisive, has bad eyes, unable to take action. In short Supermans impression of humans is that we are LOSERS, where Jesus thinks that every human being is a miracle.

jesus could make wine(alcohol) out of water, which would be invaluable at a party. Superman may be able to grill sausages with his eyes and cool beers with his breath, but for those things you can also use grill/fire and a freezer/ice/wet towel.

all that been said I would still rather have Superman to back me up in a fight, but i would rather have jesus at a party.
