I’m sure many of you have seen this video floating around a variety of atheist blogs. In case you haven’t, here is Keith Olbermann with his “Worst Person in the World” segment. Keith awarded his bronze medal to the man who donated 10,000 dollars for a New York city atheist bus ad. The ad is supposed to encourage people to “come out of the atheist” closet, but since the donor made his own identity secret, Keith undoubtedly feels that the message is complete bunk. It’s pretty tongue-in-cheek anyways, so let’s not blow a collective gasket here.
I think it’s the contradictory message that seems odd to him, and of course it would: most people outside of the atheist movement have no real understanding of what it means to actually BE an atheist. We are still the most reviled minority in the united States, and it’s understandable that not everyone wants to make their lack of belief known to their neighbors and family. Despite the fact that I consider Keith to be an otherwise intelligent man, when it comes to atheism, he’s completely out of his depth.

Olbermann kind of does have a point. I mean at least this guy put his money where his mouth is, but keeping yourself anonymous is kind of a lame move.

I agree with LB and Olbermann; what’s the point of telling people to make their beliefs known when he wont do it himself?

While Olbermann may have a point, as an atheist who hasn’t “come out” to his family yet I can sympathize with the anonymous donor. If the donor is a business owner or a high-profile figure, he is probably afraid that his public image would suffer if he made his identity known. It is through actions like this though that atheism will become more socially acceptable, and guys like this won’t have to be anonymous anymore.
Anonymously donating so that one day he might no longer have to donate anonymously. Try saying that three times fast.
Also, I really enjoyed Olbermann referring to LB as a bag of mashed-up jackass. Priceless.

I don’t think he was making a comment about the billboards so much as he was making an ironic comment on the anonymous donor. And yeah, since he announced he wouldn’t be using O’Rly in his worst persons slots, Limbaugh has been getting a lot more mockery.
