Pope sheds crocodile tears for victims of abuse

The Vatican issued this statement following the release of the Ryan report which chronicled years of abuse at the hands of priests and nuns in Catholic run reform schools, stating that Pope Benedict XVI was visibly upset and distraught. They also claim the Pope has been busy pressuring churches to be more open about the abuse. For anyone familiar with history, however, his crocodile tears are not enough to make us forget this is the same man who played a lead role in the cover up of abuses of children by the clergy.

If you really want to know how hollow and meaningless his words truly are, ask yourself how many individuals have been named in the abuses in Ireland so far. Until now, not a single name or arrest has been made. Is this beyond the power of the Pope? Of course not. If he really wanted to be part of the process, he would release the identities of every priest who committed any abuse and would rout them out of the organization. I think we can all agree such a thing will never happen; the Church is more concerned with protecting their institutions than they are in protecting kids. It’s why the abuses will never stop so long as they continue to operate with such impunity toward the law.

The governments of the world are all too gutless to demand the Vatican make the identities of offending priests public knowledge. What else can you expect from an organization that boldly claims they are the official spokesperson of an all powerful entity? Why anyone takes their claim seriously (despite the atrocities they commit) is beyond me. I can’t seem to win the argument to stop giving these guys tax free status, but do we also have to make them immune from prosecution? How insane is that?

(props to Simon for the scoop)

It never ceases to amaze me how fucked up this world is. I hope to live long enough to watch the vatican burn (metaphorically of course, it’s still a great piece of art)

Hello + thanks for article. Re the release of the identities of the criminal Brothers + Nuns, you say “i think we can all agree that such a thing will never happen,” The obstacles involved seem, indeed, to be insurmountable. We are up against a corrupt + self-aggrandizing, bigoted, uncaring + greedy institution – totally + deliberately remaining out of touch with the real world. Doing otherwise would be detrimental to their obscenely luxurious + meaningless lifestyle. So, we have a bunch of grown men prancing about in silly frocks (most likely going commando) wearing priceless jewellery whilst making life-destroying rules for millions of their ‘flock’, who idolize + obey them unquestioningly. And there is the rub. Every single Catholic i have ever met + tried to ‘enlighten’ about the greed + bigotry, the tyranny + cruelty, the immorality + misogyny of this organization has pooh-poohed my words. Most of them consider themselves to be intelligent. Yet: i would judge them to be stupid to willingly live in a cloud-cuckoo-land of unreason + denial, with the toll of misery + suffering + death caused by this obnoxious cult clear to be seen by everybody. Another obstacle is the fact that the Vatican is a State. Very cunning move. I am not knowledgeable about the tax situation + financial contribution of the Vatican to the Italian governmen, so am unable to comment. The Catholic flock is too brainwashed to boycott Church Tax. We need to petition governments to make Church Tax illegal. We need to openly + visibly + continually question the sanity + morals of a man who thinks to be merely “upset + distraught” is all that is required of him. The arrogance of these self-appointed untouchables beggars belief. Christopher Hitchens asks – in a different context – “Is the pope a Nazi?” + my answer is YES. And a criminal by association. And a common bully. And totally gormless. And, therefore, a man devoid of character and morals. A man who idles his time away in sumptuous surroundings whilst subjecting his submissive flock to misery + despair. This is sick and sickening. We need to fight for laws to overrule the secrecy of the Vatican State as well as its immunity to accountability. Every single criminal of this organization has to be made accountable for their atrocities: Lock them up + seize their assets. – Am finishing now but only because my thumb hurts – am typing this on my mobile. Bye for now from ilsa scott in London.
