The Good Atheist 064

This week we have an extra long episode of The Good Atheist Bonus Podcast. With all the news happening, we just had to talk about Newsweek tearing Oprah a new anus after her ridiculous endorsement of Susan Summers and Jenny McCarthy. Also this week, we discuss the terrible murder of Dr. George Tiller.

MMR stands for measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles)

As a former genetic counselor, I wanted to inform you that most late term abortions are done on fetuses who have severe disorders that are not compatible with life– that is, a parent finds out late in their pregnancy that their baby has anencephaly, for example– and will not survive more than a few months. Anencephalic babies don’t have a brain. It costs a lot of money to keep them alive until they die “naturally” at which point their organs cannot be used for transplanting because they are damaged in the dying process. –So the grieving mother cannot even have the knowledge that her suffering saved some other life.

There are a number of fetal anomolies like this that are always fatal, always expensive, always, traumatic, that are not diagnosed until late in the pregnancy. How diabolically cruel to be able to diagnose these cases and yet give women no option regarding the outcome. The place in Kansas where Tiller performed late term abortions was one of the few places in the NATION where women with such pregnancies could turn–and they were rare. Yes, he serviced the NATION. Insurance would usually not pay for the termination– yet parents saved up and paid for this service themselves because they understood the tragedy of letting the pregnancy continue, the children be born and the mother forced to bring a child in the world that had no hope and cost tax payers hugely (google “anencephaly”) and realize that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Those anti-abortionists ought to spend their own time and money caring for an infant that is bound to die and then lobby their congress to keep the body on life support so that it organs can be transferred to a baby that can live. This is truly more compassionate and in light with “pro-life”, isn’t it? Far more compassionate than their cruel god. By the way, how many profoundly handicapped children are each of these pro-lifers raising again –and how much money are they donating to the care of profoundly damaged infants they compel into existence?– it sure doesn’t seem like their god is coming through with the care (or funds)!

Consider the horrific situation for a woman compelled to bring a damaged baby into the world– because there is no choice. Think of the suffering to her, her family, and the taxpayers (plus the guilt that might cause the mother). Dr. Tiller was one of the few doctors bold enough to help such women. And he helped women all over the United States–not just in Kansas, because so few doctors are willing to get involved with the nutters.

There’s this misunderstanding that it’s mostly women who just decide not to have a baby late in the pregnancy. I have never known or heard of such a case. All of the late term pregnancies I know of were due to cancer in the mother or severely malformed fetuses. I bet the right to life people would be hard pressed to find a single instance of a late term abortion of convenience. Even early miscarriages cause huge distress to a woman who wants a baby. Losing an infant late in the pregnancy is traumatic– but sometimes it is the lesser of two traumas.

Also, rubella (German Measles)is very dangerous to pregnant women because it can make the baby have severe malformations (of the type necessitating a late term abortion). Kids pick it up in day care centers (we are losing “heard immunity” due to an increasing number of anti-vaxxers) so kids are getting diseases that were once rare. It often doesn’t hurt them, but it can kill infants they come in contact (who are too young for vaccination) as well as people with weakened immune systems. Moreover, these diseases can cause severe malformations in fetuses. http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=16129

If a kid just had a kidney transplant, their unvaccinated friend could kill them. We vaccinate children, not just to protect them, but to protect others who may not be as healthy as they are. Repeated studies have shown absolutely no link (ZERO CORRELATION) between vaccination and autism. Unvaccinated children are as likely (or unlikely) to be autistic as their highly vaccinated counterparts. We just happen to notice language deficits (indicating autism) at around the same age the MMR vaccine is given. Moreover an old British study (which was never actually showed a link between MMR and autism) is being trotted out and twisted through time to imagine a conspiracy despite the doctors pointed opposition to the conclusion reached by the anti-vax crowd.

My girlfriend works at the Morgenthaler clinic here in Toronto and many of the people that worked knew Tiller personally. Really a sad day in the office and a sad day for women’s rights.

One of the main disconnects that the righteous have in this situation is that NOBODY wants to have an abortion. They make it out like legions of abortion-happy people are roaming the land having a blast during this procedure.

    Angela, thanks for your input.
