Playing with fire gets you burned

The attacks of September 11th, 2001 had a profound impact on Beverly Giesebrecht. Unlike most of her Canadian peers, Beverly felt the attacks were more than justified, and she quickly converted to Islam and began work on a website with clear pro-Taliban leanings. She traveled to Egypt for two years to study the Qur’an before finally ending up in Pakistan where she met up with them. The meeting, however, appears to have gone differently from what she hoped for. Rather than take her into their fold, the Taliban kidnapped her and are holding her hostage. She is now pleading for her life, and the Canadian government is trying to rescue her.

Beverly’s problem was she failed to realize what she was getting herself into. Her interpretation of the events, and of the organizations involved, was quite obviously flawed. The Taliban are not ‘freedom fighters’ that combat the oppression of the West; they are a militant religious organization which hold extreme conservative views, and as far as they are concerned, Beverly’s worth to the cause is as a hostage, not a peer.

She is now begging for her life, only a few days away from the deadline. I have to wonder the degree of commitment the Canadian government has to save her. They are, more than likely, unwilling to negotiate with the Taliban, and they may feel that Beverly betrayed her country in favor of Islam. Regardless of what she may have said and done, it’s obvious her comprehension of the issues were flawed. She had hoped to ally with Al Qaeda to fight ‘Western oppression’, but in truth her allies have no need for an educated woman in their ranks. They would rather a 300k paycheck.

I have a feeling this story will end in tragedy. The Canadian government is unlikely to bust their asses saving her, and the Taliban will quickly grow tired of their hostage. If the situation is resolved, I have the feeling that Beverly may look well to lose her pro ‘terrorist’ leanings. I just hope she has that chance.

Do you think she’s worth 300k to Al Qaeda? Apart from the fact that she is an idiot and brought it up on herself, that money would serve to keep fuelling terrorism and islamic fundamentalism. In all onesty I believe that the way which would minimise future bloodshed is in her death. She may end up serving as an effective warning against islam. Hey I know it’s cruel and unsympathetic of me but I think you will agree that fell good propositions will only increase the damage.

Hey now! She’s not a “warning against Islam.” She’s a warning against aligning yourself with a terrorist group and thinking yourself an exception to the rule.

Mashing the militants together with the peaceful is just as bad as the deeply devout lumping intelligent atheists together with shock-jock “satanists” or those people ahead of you in line who pay for large purchases with pennies. Not cool.

In any case, I’m certain now she regrets her decision.

Also, If she survives this I’d be extremely interested in hearing what she has to say about her ordeal. I live in the states and haven’t seen a even a blip on our evening news about this.

Regardless of her stupidity, she’s a human being. I hope she returns safely and is able to teach others and keep them from falling into the same predicament.

Yes she is a human being, but how many more human beings will lose their lives if we fund the terrorists? Girl_a_saurus (awesome nick btw) it’s a mistake to think of Al Qaeda as lions in the mist of the muslim lambs. If you think that muslims are not dangerous on the whole, you should probably roam about this site a little more deeply, especially you should keep in mind the shitty bloody short end of the stick they reserve to women.

Christians and Jews reserve the short end of the stick for women too! Who doesn’t!?! I don’t agree with condemning an entire populace due to the fact that they think the same thing most of the predominant religions on our continent think as well. It makes no sense to do so. Getting caught up in the “Muslimz r eval” post 9/11 BS only serves to strengthen the awful Christian core we are forced to deal with. Look at wedding vows..”…promise to love, honor, and OBEY…” *vomits in mouth*

Come on dino chic, you can’t even remotely compare that with criminalising 16 year olds for defending themselves from being raped, or the avalange of retarded honour killings, they are on a completely new level of retarded male chauvinism. Their legal system did this not just some group of fucktards, their freaking legal system. Say what you want but in my internet rambling I never found a single redeeming quality about this culture, have you?

you just challenged me to find something trumpeting the accomplishments of Islam, you didn’t say it had to be necessarily capable of inspiring awe in a non-muslim :p

Look, I’m not saying that I agree with the way Islam dictates the treatment of women, I whole-heartedly abhor it. Sometimes, I lose sleep over it. I’m also not happy with Christian treatment of women etc…

My point here is that it’s retarded to condemn each and every single Muslim with blanket statement. They are people, and i’m sure not all of them agree with each and every last point Islam forces down their throats.

All I’m saying is that I’m sure a large number of Muslims living in Islamic nations don’t realize there is any other way of life, or if they do realize there is, they are pretty much powerless to do much but follow the theocracy, especially if they are women.

But this Beverly Bitch definately deserved what she got. If she’d followed the terrorists closely she’d have realized they have no need for an educated woman amoung them.

I never said I condemn them all individually but I definitely condemn them as a culture, and I keep the muslim stereotype in my mind when dealing with muslims , analysing familiar retarded patterns. Are you familiar with the story of the swan and the scorpian http://www.cxi-films.com/pdf/7_The_Scorpion_and_The_Swan.pdf
Love and understanding won’t help with these savages any more than it would have worked with hitler and the nazis. Ridiculing them is the only means in which I see any progress to be obtainable.

I do believe we will have to agree to disagree. Do you listen to the good atheist podcast? I listend to an episode last night that actually discussed contributions of muslim culture. I just don’t think it’s right to call peopled “savages.” Again, i agree to disagree.

Sure they did give valuable contributions by inventing maths and starting universities, but definitely nothing recent. Well what is your definition of savages? And what do they need to do to apply? For me any culture that gives an unhealthy importance and justification for violence is composed of a bunch of savages, and muslims definitely fit these criteria.

How do you think their treatment of women can be improved if you respect their beliefs and their treatment of women stems from their beliefs?
