Don’t be a Turkey!

Turkey is a strange country. In the 1920s, a military commander, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, started the Turkish national movement after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and formed the country now known as Turkey. He made special provisions to make the country secular, in order to prevent the Islamic church from wrestling control away from him. Like in the United States, the population is highly religious, and despite the provisions made to prevent religion from interfering with politics, that policy is slowly eroding.

Case in point: the editor of the state run Scientific and Technological Research Council was fired over a cover story about Darwin‘s 200th anniversary. As you may know, Turkey is the only democratic country that beats out the United States in terms of evolution denial. This firing is a bold statement about the new policy of this government: evolution is out, insane creationism is in.

This pattern will gain momentum, and I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years the government was entirely controlled by Islamic fundamentalists. I feel like we are losing the battle here, and the worst thing is there is nothing we can do about it.

Don’t worry, dude. We haven’t lost the battle. If history has taught us anything, it’s that rationality always triumphs. It does so very, VERY slowly, perhaps, but at least it does so……
