This was an issue I was pondering myself, since I am happily married to my wonderful atheist wife and we are almost at the child-having stage. I was never really sure what I wanted to do about the Santa deal - I'm firmly in the ALL REASON ALL THE TIME I DON'T CARE ABOUT COMFORT OR HOPE category that people hate for being right. It's because I'm right! Damn you all!

Anyway, after reading this article I've decided to definitely go with it. Totally agree with the development of reasoning thing - I wouldn't want to shield them from it and have them suddenly be converted to Glotharism when someone gives them a pamphlet at college.

Plus it's a great way to find out early if you have the condition known as "stupid children".

Excellent article Mr. Fortin.

I always believed in allowing children to accept Santa. I find it sad and embarrassing when no-nothing "realistic" parents mash it into their children's minds that they aren't allowed to hope and dream like other kids are. Let your child be a child while they can. Don't think you're giving your kid some sort of philosophical head start in life by taking away their imagination before they could read or write.

If you want to talk about commercialized and capitalist holidays, please look towards Valentine's Day. That's borderline sickening.

I look at Christian apologists and find it amusing to think that in another thousand years, there could be Clausian apologists who point back to the 20th century and say, "See, even only a few hundred years after St. Nicholas' death, already the majority of the Western world believed in his omniscience, sang hymns in his honor and held many of our basic tenents about His Joliness!"
