Black magic in India
Remember the Spanish Inquisition? Not exactly a shining moment for Christianity. Luckily, we can confidently say such shameful barbarism as immolation and torture over something as stupid as practicing magic are relegated to the past, right? Well, no actually. It seems an industrious and rather poorly educated mob in India decided an innocent elderly couple had to be burned alive. Why? Well, apparently they were all quite distraught over the news their neighbors were practicing black magic. Their proof? Who needs something all silly as proof when you’re out of touch with reality?
It isn’t uncommon for many rural Indians to be superstitious and fearful of dark, invisible forces. This has led to countless tragedies, and every year, dozens of women are murdered for ‘practicing’ witchcraft. It seriously boggles the mind how anyone could be incited into killing their neighbors in such a cold-blooded fashion. The act of immolation isn’t pretty; the couple in Hyderabad, India died screaming in terrible pain, according to eyewitness accounts. The killers themselves probably thought it was their duty to remove what they perceived as a dire threat to their community. But we’re no longer in the 17th century, and India is not an unsophisticated nation; they possess a serious nuclear arsenal. How can they consider themselves a responsible nation despite the fact a large proportion of their population has dangerously antiquated beliefs? As the world’s largest democracy, is it not conceivable to think many of their constituents, who are deeply religious and incredibly uneducated might elect representatives who share their frightening world views?
